Offensive

I have been accused of being this many times in my life. But please tell me apart from the obvious. What constitutes an offensive action and defensive action an attack and a counter attack. What is a line of fire please. Offensive action to me is being aggressive and going on for the attack. Defensive action is waiting to be attacked and try to stall the offensive of your enemy and fighting back. If your army has enough armour and men trying to counter attack and gain the land that is lost, if it is lost, and sometimes taking some from your enemy. Some German generals wanted Hitler to agree to a defensive form of action in Russia at one time. Exactly what would this mean in terms of strategy and machines planes tanks armour? Also what is a motorised division and what weapons does it have? thank you for your time. Please this might be rich coming from me but keep it simple thankyou again.

Okay, this is gonna be somewhat superficial. Generally, offense is attacking, defense is, well, defending. A major offensive covers a large area, well above and beyond local action. Sitting on the defensive means waiting for the enemy.

Now, a counterattack is important. IF the enemy breaks through your lines, then you'll want a reserve force standing by. That way, a strong non-tired force can hit the enemy (who is tired) and force them back through your lines, cleaning up the breakthrough.

Basically, if you can hit something, it's in your line of fire. Line of sight and line of fire are similar, but usually LOS is much longer than LOF, because your eyes have longer range than most weapons.

It would mean falling back, maintaining a cohesive front, and hitting the enemy when he has extended himself somewhat. It would mean letting the enemy beat his head against your defenses, wearing his forces down.

Essentially the same as an infantry division, but with more trucks to transport the troops.
