Like I said in Above post....Two Independent Tigers Battalions were in the area. schwere (FK) 301 and schwere PZ Abt 506. What Mr. Yamashita said was entirely possible with these independent Tiger groups moving about and avoiding Allied Air. Most of (FK) 301 did get caught by air....and others where taken not too far away from the area by US troops while loaded on rail cars. A single operating Tiger put in support of the 21st Div is NOT to far Fetched.


sPzAbt 506 also had a Company operating in the area in roughly the same time frame, (The book lists it as 4Kompanie) And it had a fuzzy B&W pic of a Tiger Overrun by US Infantry (Maybe the same Tiger Mr. Yamashita notes???) This pic was from an area very near Vosges

That could very well be the case then. Nice work on this thread. It shows the confused state of the Wermacht deployments too. The abandoned Tiger is entirely plausible as many were due to lack of fuel and ammo. It shows the effect of Allied air power when you think that such a powerful vehicle could become useless without having to be knocked out.

maybe Sgt Rock called in air support to hammer the supply vehicles he spotted hiding further away ? Clever boy.

He would have called in air support, but they only had one 300 radio and the batteries were all dead -- save for one that, though dying it kept them in contact with the rear until they were resupplied by an airdrop.

If any of you want to know the back story of the Lost Battalion, google that, 442nd RCT, Go For Broke, or pick up Franz Stiedl's excellent book, "Lost Battalions."

That will give you a clear indication of the whole shebang!
