Rogue Fortress
During the American daylight bomber offensive against Germany, a B17 Flying Fortress that had been brought down was salvaged almost intact by the Germans. In due course this aircraft manned by a Luftwaffe crew was once more put into the air. But this time against its former owners.
Flying close to the incoming American bomber fleets, the German crew would send out a distress call calling for assistance. Any American aircraft responding to this fake call would then be ambushed by waiting fighters and shot down.
After a while the American crews became aware of this deadly trap and arranged a surprise of their own, at the next opportunity.
When at last the Germans attempted the trick again, it was responded to by a waiting B-40. The B-40 looked to all intents and purposes like an unsuspecting B17 hurrying to the aid of a stricken friend. Instead it was a B17 without a bombload, but carrying many additional machine guns.
As soon as the rogue Fortress was identified, the B-40 opened fire with all of its firepower. The treacherous Germans went down in flames.
