2. Who was Zhukov's Soviet rival general in the Battle for Berlin? I want to say Weichsel, but I'm not sure....

3. Which country in Nazi-occupied Europe did the Allies bomb suspecting German heavy water production? Norwegen

6. Who was Otto Skorzeny? Oh, where to start?

8. First operational jet fighter in WW II? Me-262

9. What was Plan Eclipse? Himmler's plan to block out sunlight over the American Midwest, so as to hamper the US food supplies.

10. What is the original meaning of Swastika? Good luck!

Tom, I think he's looking for Zhukov's "friendly" rival. Ivan Koniev, probably.

Lightbulb Re: Joy's WW II quiz!

Ok Tom, your answers to Qs. 1,3,7,8 & 10 were correct. Pretty good= 50% 'marks' scored!

Temujin (sounds Mongolian to me!) is correct; Koniev was the 'friendly' rival to Zhukov, both trying to capture Berlin first. In fact, K. had already reached a point nearer Berlin than Zh., but the Vozhd (Stalin) leaned in favour of Zh.

The other answers are:
6. Seems you know a lot, but anyway, Skorzeny was the leather-neck SS commando who rescued Mussolini and later organised saboteurs behind US lines, creating confusion! So much so that it is stated that Gen. Monty himself was detained by a US trooper. The latter wouldn't let him into a US HQ till he could prove that he was not a fake! Hats off the Otto!

Incidentally, the seemingly peaceful Austria with its pretty 'Sound of Music' and Salzburg seems to have influenced Germany in a disproportionate way. And with an overdose of the macho cult! Hitler, the later RSHA boss Kaltenbrunner (another tough built!), and Otto were all Austrians, as far as I know. Look at the California Gubernator, too! The he-manest of them all (though has nothing to do with the 3. Reich!).

Re: Joy's WW II quiz!

So no questions 4 & 5?

For:

9. What was Plan Eclipse?

I'm guessing the German surrender in Italy at the
end of the war.

You might want to check out the link to the
99th Battalion article in the US "ethnic" units
thread for some SNAFUs Skorzeny caused
that unit.

10. What is the original meaning of Swastika?

Actually comes from 100's of years ago or more and had something to do with religion.

It was a symbol of luck dating back many centuries if not millennia. It has been used in the past by Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Pagans, and even Jews (the floor of the synagogue at Ein Gedi, built during the Roman occupation of Judea, was decorated with a swastika).

Since its incorporation by the Nazis it has become taboo and even illegal in Western cultures.
