Re: Favorite Battle
I would have to say D-Day first and foremost. The Battle of the Bulge has to rank up there just becuase they were surrounded and freezing to death. But the one that also interests me is the battle to keep the shipping lanes open. Countries were escorting other ships, though they weren't in the war. They often didn't have what they needed to properly defend the ships they were escorting. Pretty ineresting stuff!

Re: Favorite Battle
Battle of Britain may not be a "battle" in the typical sense, but we can't overlook that importance.
If I must pick an absolutely favorite, I must say the Normandy landing and the subsequent campaign in the region is interesting to me from every perspective. The paratroopers, the fight through the bocage country, and the Falaise pocket... every bit of it reflected our (ie. 21st century WW2 enthusiasts) guilty pleasure of something that was utterly hell for those who had been there. On the Russian front, the Battle of Moscow is a battle I wish to learn more of. It was a battle of key importance, but yet it is something westerners typically are not as well-versed with. |

Re: Favorite Battle
I would concur wiht Luft's choice. For me the Seelow Heights was a fascinating battle but also the pre-cursor of the breakout of the 9th Army from the Halbe Pocket. A terrible deperate action that was indicative of the many desperate last actions of the third Reich.

Re: Favorite Battle
For me personally, I try to avoid anything connected with D-Day or the European Theatre.
I am an Honorary member of the Irish Regiment of Canada Veterans Association, therefore my interests lay in the Italian Threatre and Holland. I am interested in many of the battles in Italy, although again, nothing to do with the famous Monte Cassino. (Irish Regt of Canada were not there) The most intriguing battle for me is Coriano. It is regarded by the Regiment as our premier battle. It is also the battle my uncle and namesake was killed in. |

Re: Favorite Battle
I would definitely choose the fighting along the Douve River in Normandy, Holland, Bulge, and Tarawa as the battles I am most interested in.
