Sept. 12, 1944. Almost all of the 10,000 inhabitants were wiped out from daylight saturation bombing.

In der Nacht vom 11./12. September 1944 wird Darmstadt durch einen Großangriff der Royal Air Force in eine Trümmerwüste verwandelt; über 11000 Menschen sterben, rund 66000 Menschen sind obdachlos.

Add that to Dresden, Hamburg etc. The "humans" you refer to were most likely civilians. Sad,to say the least.
