I used to exhibit my art. If I had a dollar for everybody who told me they didn't know anything about art I'd be richer than I am from selling it. It's all about 'what looks right' rather than having some rigid formula or whatever. Seems from what I've seen of your stuff in the past RB, you've got a pretty good eye for composition even if you 'don't know it'.
Lookin' great mate. This thread will certainly stay afloat by itself.
Thanks mate, very kind of you to say so. Now if I can just figure out where to put this 1/16 scale Godzilla ......

Seriously Nick,
Thanks

See what I mean?! That Godzilla was waaay to small for 1/16. It should fit right into a DAK diorama.
There was a bloke who did a 'talk' at our club about diorama composition. Sadly, this dude lived up to the stereotypical modeller in that he was socially awkward and terrified of public speaking. Before his presentation degenerated into a whine about his bad marriage he pointed out a pretty interesting pair of observations. The first was that people usually use a prime number of trees if they have trees at all...3,5 or 7. The other thing was that long features such as the subject, fences, roads or railway tracks should never be parallel to the edges of the base. Fair enough I think.

I agree, first of all trees are a pain in the arse if you make em right, I always felt that one was enough if done properly and he is right about the angle, my wall will be on a slight angle , parallel is not good, looks contrived I think.

It can be a difficult but interesting problem to solve. I guess it depends on what you're trying to convey. Sometimes I like dioramas built on asymmetrical bases too. I particularly like Lemm's dios that are on different levels...there's a nice vertical variation that keeps the eye working without looking 'posed' or cluttered. And nothing says 'I have no imagination' like seeing the same ideas rehashed over and again. I also kinda like the 'Zen' approach that less is more. Personally, I'll be taking a closer look at Dr. Shige's stuff the next time I attempta dio.
Peace.

Re: Diorama Construction - Opel Blitz/flak38

I'll have to post this in two parts, dumb as I am I can't figure how to get in more than 4 pictures per post.

Started out with dry wall joint filling compound, (plaster of paris would have worked but I couldn't find it and probably wouldn't have used it if I did.....don't really like to use anything with the word "paris" in it, but I digress).

Anyhoo, I mixed some compound, water and water based 'ochre' acrylic paint together on top of a kitty litter bucket lid - formed a nice little tray/mould for my mixture.

Worked in the water and paint until I got the consistency of Jell-o Pudding. Smoothed it out as level as I could get it and let it set-up over night.

I don't think it's possible to attach more than four pictures in a post. The overall limit is ten pictures per post includin' smileys. How does the I do to post ten pictures in a post? That's easy as I host my images on my own private webhost computer that I've got runnin' in my wardrobe.

Re: Diorama Construction - Opel Blitz/flak38

Here's the other four -

Let it set up for about 12 hours. Pretty well cured by this morning.

Popped up a piece and commenced to breakin' it up into wall-rock sized pieces.

Cut a strip out of apiece of styrene sheet to use as my wall base. Crazy glue seems to work okay for affixing the stones together.

Still got some more to do on it but you get the idea.

Patience LT, I'm fighting the urge to finish this tonight!
But I have committed to take my time with this one in an attempt to lower the number of "Should Have's" that always arise after you have finished a diorama. You know, those little things you always spot later on like a small unpainted area, bit of glue visible, that sort of thing.
