Re: My ongoin' Panther Ausf. G Späte build

The only reason it kinda daunts me, personally, is the thought that I'm still trying to "figure out" weathering. I never weathered my models before meeting you sorry lot, haa haaaa! The weathered effects I've seen all of you do inspired me to jump onboard, but I'm winging it, at best, at my current level. I need a lot more practice and models under my belt before I can achieve what I see some of you all produce; and I mean that with due humility. One Panther tank does not a weatherer make! So, weathering on the trees seems a bit ambitious to me for my comfort zone, is all. Yes, no?

You could get a cheaper kit and give it a try as a suggestion. I get $20 Academy kits to try stuff on. But you could even get a ten buck 1/72 aircraft or vehicle...if it doesn't work out the way you want you can use it as a testbed in the future...or strip it and start again.

Ahhhh, Master Yoda, this Jedi has read your thoughts! I have a Star Wars Land Walker or AT-AT? I bought for $5 at a toy store, and a 1/72 Sopwith "Comic" Fighter I picked up at a model show for $8. Going to experiment on them!!! MUUUHAHAHA!

That sounds great Emery! Think 'bout the rust effects you can apply on the Land Walker.

I suggest that you paint it in dull steel n' then get medivial on it with oil dotwashes n' then play 'round with rust pigments as a final step.

Re: My ongoin' Panther Ausf. G Späte build

If McCoy means what I think he does...'pigments' are commercially available powders...kinda like the dry pastel powder but a bit finer. I've only dabbled with their use...but I think the pastels are just as good and cheaper. If you intend to clear coat...you need to 'overdo' the pastels a bit.

Re: My ongoin' Panther Ausf. G Späte build

Ohhh, I believe I've seen those online, now that you mention it. Looked like they were packaged in a manner like what you see a woman's compact powder, complete with little brushes/spongy-type things.

Re: My ongoin' Panther Ausf. G Späte build

The ones I have are by 'Mig'. His stuff is good but I get the feeling that he's repackaging ordinary stuff. His book highly recommends filters made by 'Sin Industries'. I make my own with a drop of Humbrol enamel and turpentine...total cost? Around thirty cents at a conservative guess. He also sells 'modellers' oil paint' which is purported to have extra fine pigments. 'Abteilung 501' is his brand. I use 'Maries' oil paint...$3.50 for a set of twelve. Abteilung is very expensive. His 'pigments' retail for around $9.00 a jar. I have a set of 24 pastels that I rub on a file...you can buy the expensive 'dedicated' stuff but the ordinary 'back-yard' varieties are fine. I bought my three jars of pigment just to see what they're all about. They're the same as pastel powder for all intents and purposes and work exactly the same way. Wet or dry, there's no difference I can see.
