Re: Flames of War

Thanks, just saw them on the FoW site today before work. As far as I know, there is not, but some interesting books on painting and Camo, I'll try to squeeze in a pic sometime.

Cheers

Tom

Re: Flames of War

Per request of TRDG, I had promised to post some pics of Classic Armor miniatures, most readily available at Wal-Mart at one time, and Axis & Allies Miniatures, for comparison.

This first example is of, from left to right:
  • Veteran Panzer III, Ausf. L from Axis & Allies Miniatures, North Africa Set (newest set)
  • Panzer III, Ausf. F from Axis & Allies Miniatures, 1939-1945 Set (an earlier set)
  • Panzer III, Ausf. F from Axis & Allies Miniatures, Set II (older set)
  • Panzer III, Ausf. E from Classic Armor

Same list, but from top to bottom

This last picture shows the Panzer III from Classic Armor with the packaging

Re: Flames of War

This next example is of, from left to right:
  • Jagdpanther from Axis & Allies Miniatures, 1939-1945 Set (newer set)
  • Jagdpanther from Axis & Allies Miniatures, original Base Set (earlier set)
  • Jagdpanther from Classic Armor

DSC00254.JPG

Same list as above, but from top to bottom

And to really illustrate the difference, the Classic Armor on top of the latest Axis & Allies Miniature 1939-1945 Set version.

DSC00256.JPG

Note the camouflage patterns, and how varied they are. The larger AAM has superior detail; the smaller AAM is very bland; and the Classic Armor has an awesome paint scheme, but absolutely no detail, so the camo has to really carry the limelight for what it lacks in detail.

Also, this is really illustrating what I was trying to get across on other threads...that the resize of the Axis & Allies Miniatures really is dramatic. This unit really shows the size difference well. It really stinks that Wizards of the Coast had to wait so long to realize their 15mm goof and subsequent correction. For me, to have both the AAM units on the board at the same time is just too glaring to bear with...anal though it may be, I just can't do it! And these little suckers are expensive to mothball!!!

This next example is of, from left to right:
  • Jagdtiger from Axis & Allies Miniatures, D-Day Set
  • Jagdtiger from Classic Armor

And the same list as above, but top to bottom

The size difference between the Axis & Allies Miniatures version and the Classic Armor version is surprisingly close. Not sure what to make of this!

Re: Flames of War

And my last example shows the Sturmpanzer IV "Brummbar" from Axis & Allies Miniatures, 1939-1945 Set (newer set) at top; the Sturmpanzer IV "Brummbar" from Classic Armor on bottom left; and a 88mm Flak 36, from the Axis & Allies Miniatures, North Africa Set to the bottom right. This shows a drastic difference between Axis & Allies Miniatures and Classic Armor, in relation to other pieces.

DSC00261.JPG

So, my closing thoughts on it are, the Classic Armor, though an amazing deal at the US $1.97 I paid for each, is just too glaring. Put on top of that the fact that most Axis & Allies Miniatures armor, when bought individually from online dealers and at shows, generally run anywhere around the US $15.00-20.00 range, and that further complicates things. Unfortunately for me, I just think Classic Armor cannot compare to Axis & Allies Miniatures in detail and quality; and are nowhere near 15mm, and hence do not match up well with neither my current OOB, nor with the traditional miniatures scle, in general.

Thumbs up Re: Flames of War

Thanks for coming through with the pics, very nice. I think the point of maybe collecting "Wally" armour (LOL) is that if you are just starting out in one of the games that use models in general. Remember you can always repaint them, FoW models just went up to around 10-13 bucks per tank or unit, OUCH!!!!

Cheers
