Question Flames of War

The reason I got on the net in the first place last year, has anyone played it here?

A (somewhat, to me) basic, but interesting miniature game from the start of WW II til the Russian march into Berlin. Right now, the game is focused on Normandy and the 21st Pz division. Ya gotta love those interesting "french" rebuilds, from the various half-tracks to the 7.5cm and 10.5cm 39 H from the Becker assault gun battalion!!
All of that and more in the Monty's Meatgrinder Battle book just released.

Cheers

TRDG

Tom

Re: Flames of War

I've not yet played Flames of War yet

It looks awesome to play, and I wouldn't rule out my owning it sometime in the future. The vehicles look far superior to anything I've seen...even more than my beloved Axis & Allies OOB...but I can't get myself to get behind the infantry yet, which look so oddly cartoonish to me. Something strikes a twang in my Artist sensibilities in that, it baffles me currently how any manufacturer can spend so much time on finely intricate vehicle sculpture, ownly to pair it up with cartoonish-bodied infantry figures; unless, of course, that was the point for some strange reason. It just seems so glaring to me. Or maybe I just don't get it (wouldn't be the first time!).

I have minimal experiance with miniature figure painting, none of which deals with metal, so that holds me back at present also.

I understand that it is extremely addicting. I saw it at Origins last Summer, and I had meant to spend some quality time in a demo, but alas, I was booked to the brim, and couldn't quite scrape the time together to do so. This Summer, I plan to have a much less hectic schedule, and plan to spend more time checking out the demos in the Dealer Hall.

Sooooo, tell me about what you like about the system!

Wink Re: Flames of War

To much to get into at the moment, I'm on a lunch break. For the moment, I'll leave ya with some very good models to paint up, machines though, not to good yet with the infrantry, but I run em. Then you actually get to "play" with what you made up and painted!!

The game itself, it's more like for tourny style play at the moment, but we usually try to do "historic" battles, Kursk, Bridge to far, Normandy and Africa campaigns in the last 4 years or so!!

It's very fun, but pricy, if you really want to get into it and have all the "good stuff" on the table, as well as all the terrain.

Cheers, to be continued!!

Post Re: Flames of War

One more before I crash this morning Whiterook

Bagration is coming out in October sometime this year for the Eastern front, and I'm doing a litle playtesting for the designer, for an idea I have for the Russian Tankovy forces, specifically for a Hen and Chick rule FoW has. No big deal, all the test groups are full, so I'm on my own with my fellow players here in Wisconsin.

Cheers, see you soon.

Re: Flames of War

You've got my attention, Tom! It sounds like you've got quite the OOB established for your FoW collection. I'm at a similar point with Axis & Allies Minis...I have several dollars invested in the system, and probably more purchasing isn't that far off in the future! Not that I'm made of money, by any means really, but I have a few hobbies I am willing to devote resources to. My buying strategy on AMM has actually saved me several hundred dollars as well, so there is symetry....so there some hope for me, I guess?

WhiteRook

Here is a sample of what I bought yesterday, and what I hope it will look like when I'm done. That's about 1,450 points out of the standard 1,500 point game in Flames of War, a hard force to fight with, fairly fragile, but that's half the fun and challange of this force of the 21st Pz Division!!

Cheers, to getting a look at that map for the game on this site!

Post Re: Flames of War

It might be very interesting to try some kind of battle at The Zones game forum sometime.
I will try to explain the basics here in the near future, for now, I will go into basic armour Companies in general on the nest post fairly soon.

Cheers
