Re: Paper or Plastic?

Well DD is certainly taking a stand!

And whereas I am of the same Avalon Hill era, and of which is still a prefered game system, I must rush to the defense of my mini brothers and sisters. Miniatures are no longer just a domain of rules intensive systems like Axis & Allies Miniatures, and Flames of War, just to name two. There are in fact very good minis-based boardgames out there that are not all that disimilar to RISK on steroids. I give you two such magnificaent beasts!

Memoir '44!
I love, love, love this game (see my review in the Moderator's Game Review section). It plays with minis, yet is very much a cross between such favorites as the Axis & Allies board games, and our Avalon Hill beauties. These are nowhere close to as difficult a game system and Flames of War or A&A MInis.

And Tide of Iron!
a much harder game to play, yet still not anywhere as intense as Avalon Hill type fare, or the aforementioned FoW or AAM.

These are must owns for the boardgamer and the wargamer. This will make you look at minis in a whole new way, trust me!

Re: Paper or Plastic?

good points there Whiterook. Easy to play and fun yet requiring a reasonable amount of thought.

Although I enjoy Tabletop miniatures games like Memoir '44 are great when friends drop in or when there are two of us who want a game that doesn't take six hours.

Re: Paper or Plastic?

Thanks Magna. The best thing about Memoir '44 for me is, I play it solitaire all the time. Probably one of the best games for 2 players that plays excellent solo! Tidde of Iron is far more demanding...and I haven't tried it solo yet. By the way, I just heard Tide of Iron has an expansion that came out last month...I need to look into this more. I'm going to try and wait until Origins International Game Fair in June to buy it in the Dealer's Room at discount!

Re: Paper or Plastic?

Paper because I get the historical unit designations on the units in play.

Ooooo, nice point on that! One of the best thing about paper-based games. To counter that in the plastic world, soem hgames, like Axis & Allies Miniatures, have STAT CARDS, hat have a lot of that data, as well as "Flavor text".

Re: Paper or Plastic?

I am a fan of the games that incorporate both methods i.e. Axis and Allies for example. The idea behind games such as Red Storm Rising were innovative for their time, but were too time consuming to set up and track to be able to appreciate the game play. The advent of computer gaming has taken the forefront against the old school board games. It is a shame actually, as I recall the days of my youth when the family would gather around the dining room table for a game of monopoly, or axis and allies and such. It was a way to bond as a family on cold winter nights, or when the rain was too heavy to do much else. Sure, television was okay, but that was before cable t.v. (am I showing my age here? LOL). Take care you all, and remember, try to set aside at least one day a week to do a board game with your family. It is worth it. Tom.

Well, some good points there Tom...and great advice to game once a week with the family! Computers and consoles have certainly put a large whopping dent in boardgaming to be sure, but not the death knell, thank goodness. I actually see more and more board games at the hobby stores these days, than say, even 10 years go. And of the 5 or so hobby/game stores in my general area, all of them have an active gaming schedule, which is soooooo cool! I know there are many that swear by computer and console games, and rightfully so; but boardgaming just can't be beat. Especially in the social context.....I think boardgaming wins that catagory hands-down! Plus, I've never known a boardgamer that got Carpal Tunnel!
