OK people.......Paper or Plastic?

For all you board gamers out there:

Many games out there on the market today, utilized cardboard counters to depict units of infantry, artillery, vehicles. These follow in the long line of the ancients (as in the icons such as Avalon Hill, Victory Games, SPI), but with greater emphasis on graphics color and art. They are truly works of art to the old Grognard in all of us!

Many games out on the market today utilize plastic figure miniatures, reminiscent of the the toy soldiers many of us played with in our youth, but smaller and in many cases, more detailed. To a child of the 60's, these minis bring back fond memories of tons of soldiers lined up all over the living room floor!

The former can be more the fare of the grognard, whereas the latter more the casual board gamer.....both have an appeal to a different want or need.

So I ask again, Paper or Plastic?

I must admit I don't like stacking counters so the plastic figures are my favourite.

Mine was plastic, "kind of"...... In Flames of War, they are resin, metal and some plastic, so that was the best I could do here for ya!

Yeah, I hear 'ya Mate...stacking them little cardboard counters can b a real drag! I sometimes use tweezers, but mostly just pinch and poke!

Nothing wrong with that, my friend...I admire any General that can master them little metal figs. Hey, how about starting a thread here at the Game Forum showing pics of your FoW minis? We'd all love to see them, and can learn a thing or two....and actually, now that I think of it, the Model Forum could benefit from it, too!

That's a good idea. Many of the miniature scales are not regarded as actual models. They may be missing detail when compared to 1/35th but the overall effect of minis in a larger diorama is something to be seen.

We are lucky here as the members in the modelling section would definitely appreciate it.

Thanks guys, I am really humbled by that!!! But, at the moment, I have no digital camera, hopefully sometime in the semi-near future, then figure out how to download the pics...... But I will ask you guys when I get the dig, honest!! and try to get my 7,000 $ worth of FoW stuff up here somehow after that!!!

The best I can do now is get some pics from their site to show here, but not my work, so to speak, I'm not that good, yet..... (hope to in the future)

One hint for those with the facilities. A sand table is a great base foe any gaming. Terrain can be sculpted and then you just add roads, vegetation, buildings. The trick - use large grain builders sand dyed green. This is what is used for some arenas where horses compete, showjumping and the like. Instead of chewing up the grass they can actually rake it flat again after each competitor. If a water jump is needed they dig a hole and put in a plastic liner. Brilliant stuff and cheap. It need to be about three inches deep and foam is usually used to build up higher features.

I have seen this done with an old snooker table. Big enough and strong enough with room to store things under. Another one I have seen was a remodelled kitchen or dining table with fold off tops. It became a table when not in use for gaming and the game could be left set up if not finished. Just a thought for when you have a couple of hours to spare.

Our pleasure for sure, Mate! Every hobby has a degree of difficulty and skill...modeling is much like sculpture (of which I have had a fair bit of experience in) in forming a finished product from what would make many run screaming in the other direction; wargaming takes a high degree of analysis and execution, skill in commanding a battlefield for high stakes, and those miniatures make the battlemap come alive...so do the counters, in a different way, but the miniatures make it more personal, in my opinion.

You say your FoW minis aren't "that good"...I would disagree most strongly, even having not personally seen them, because: but for the simple fact that they exist, they are magnificent! I mean that!!!!! I spent years trying to convince myself that my paintings, illustrations and sculptures "weren't that good" (a mild form of perfectionism, though my wife would perhaps elevate that ranking beyond "mild"), until one lovely day the Godess of Good Sense smacked me upside the head and I realized.....

They exist in a world where once they had not; ergo, they are special and magnificent in their own right for that very reason.

Repeat after me everyone: "WHITEROOK IS GOOD, WHITEROOK IS WISE!"

I still exact a high degree of self-critiquing on any of my endeavors' level of quality, but I've not labeled anything "crap" in well over a decade!

On the camera...at worst, if your interested, most pharmacies sell reusable digital cameras that can take up to 20-30+ pics, which you drop the camera back off at the store, and they make a CD, which you load on your computer and Presto Chango, you've got mail! I can also highly recommend: a Nikon Coolpix, which you can buy for about $100, and I use for traveling/fun; and I use a Sony DSC Cyber-Shot for my artistic endeavors (and model pics, which I also classify an artistic endeavor), which cost me around $500 greenbits. The pics from the sony are just plain spectacular!!!
