Knowing When To Stop

Anyone else like this?
You read about or devise some great new technique (or so you think) for making rust or chipped paint or mud or whatever and you start out on your new kit with the express intention of putting this new revelation to good use. Things go well until the time comes to try out the new idea. You get everything ready and begin...a touch here, a dab there. Not too confident because this is new. As you go, you begin to notice that your model looks nothing like that beautiful Tiger in the magazine...maybe you need to do a bit more. So you do. Still doesn't look as good as you'd hoped. Step back and look again from a distance. Maybe you need to do a bit more. Nope, still not right...maybe you need to do a bit more. Hmmm...not quite what we're looking for but that bit over there looks pretty good. Maybe you need to do a bit more. Now it just looks stupid. Maybe you need to do a bit more...
Peace.

Re: Knowing When To Stop

I think the real trick to realistic weathering is not starting it but knowing when to stop!!

I have the same problem with how much camo to put on certain models.

Weathering usually take a few weeks for me. Not just because I'm a sporadic builder but I do a little and then let it sit for a few days. Sometimes I just sit at the desk and look at the model while spinning it around on my turntable.

I do this too. I used to have a female housemate years ago. When I moved into her house (we were good buddies at the time, she rented me her spare room) I didn't have much space so I used to model in the lounge room. I'd sit there staring at what I'd done. One time, she walked into the room and said; 'What the **** are you doing? Watching the paint dry?' I had to say that I was.

Re: Knowing When To Stop

Well, I'm too fresh back into modeling to have suffered from that thusfar, but I have a bunch of old canvases that ended up with fresh coats of Gesso because of just such a practice!
