Re: Evergreen IPMS Show

The Corsair is a pretty good colour according to some of my references. Especially for a 'bird cage' (early style canopy) example. Think land based, sun faded, crappy maintenance facilities, dirt (then mud) strip etc. I believe the 'midnight blue' used by the navy came a bit later.
The P-38 is my favourite too. It's awesome for 1/72.

Good point on the land-based bird! Especially in the South Pacific!

Re: Evergreen IPMS Show

Well without consulting my references, it's an educated guess. To be honest, I haven't seen my study for a few days...my son is being particularly trying at the moment and I'm tired...not great for modelling. I have four books by an amazing British artist named Robert Taylor who is, in my opinion, the best of the air combat artists. Rigorous in his research and a beautiful wielder of oil paint...I think you'd appreciate him Em. One of his works is entitled 'The Elephants of Puttalam' and it shows F4U Corsairs being pulled out of mud and onto Marsden Matting by elephants with huge letters painted onto their sides. From memory, the Corsairs are RNZAF (New Zealand) but they left their Corsairs whatever colour they were delivered in and only painted their own roundel over the star...leaving the bars. The aircraft are the colour of the one we're discussing.
Peace.

Re: Evergreen IPMS Show

Well, it seems I was wrong about the colour of the aircraft, but it's a cool pic anyway.
