Re: Group Build 8 week! 25 yr old kit! $$PRIZE

The story so far. What I don't get is the poor fit with the kit. I've built it once before n' didn't experience this lousy fit in the parts. My first build must have been a lot older n' moulded from a fresher mould.

Not really...perhaps to non-modellers but I understand. Incidentally, this is what I would have entered into this build had I participated.

Airfix 196A-3.jpg

And what a dog it is. Actually, I should probably have entered this build and done this kit. I can't think of another reason to build it other than 'let's see what we can make from this awful kit'.
BTW the Carro Armato looks like it's in the same boat as the Tamiya Marder II I built. It's looking good though and the PE and Friul tracks should really set it off. Good luck.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.

I hope we can see the Daimler when it's finished. Are you doing it as a captured one ?

The Dingo is in fact on more or less a permanent hold. We'll see what happens with it, maybee a burnt out wreck in a future diorama or so...

It is certainly very cool looking, though. I hope you build her some day mate!! I'd really like to see it.

Re: Group Build 8 week! 25 yr old kit! $$PRIZE

Sadly, my imagination is very ambitious. I bought it on a whim at our local toy shop for twelve bucks...a kinf trip down memory lane if you like. Then my imagination took over. I've seen some amazing 'silk purses' made from 'sow's ears' with lots of scratch built detail and that's what I have in mind for this kit. As far as I know, the Arado 196 is only available as this particular kit and it's unique as the only floatplane used in Europe (as opposed to 'flying boat'). It has classic Arado lines (they messed with jets that had unaltered vertical tail surfaces), excellent endurance and armament (for its type) and is a beautiful machine to my eye. Besides all that, the idea of salt water corrosion really opens up some weathering doors and you know how I hate weathering.
Before I tackle this project, I will practice my scratch building skills in two ways. First, I intend to try my hand by enhancing the rather spartan cockpit of Academy's Boeing P-26. I have a nice cut away drawing of it in a magazine. Then I plan to copy some of the parts of my Verlinden P-38 detail set for my practice P-38...should keep me off the streets for a while. Of course all this can change in an instant...I might get inspired by something else in my stash instead...Hasegawa's 1/48 Hawker Typhoon for example...been a long time since I built a British aircraft.
