It sounds like a good plan! Yes I think that you should prime it first. Try to get hold of Games Workshop Skull White to use as a primer. It's a good n' cost effective rattlecan spray that's excellent as a primer. I use that one plus their Chaos Black as primers.

Yeah their spray primers are awesome and give you a good rough texture base for all your other paints to bond to.

I can third the motion about the Games Workshop primers. They are good for soft plastic 1/72nd scale figures so they should be great for anything.

Progress update:

Fusalage together and wing upper and lower surfaces painted.

Cockpit detail.

Halifax Cockpit.

Interestingly, the Halifax has a /G suffix after the serial number. This denotes that it should be guarded at all times (usually because it has secret equipment fitted). I will try to find an RAF guard to display with it!

Wolster, I just started a thread you might be interested to see about the use of primers. I never use them myself as they just amount to a 'detail softening, unneccessary coat of paint' to me. Of course we all do things differently and white paint CAN be difficult to use. Personally, I'd stick to using a rattle-can of white and apply several light coats over a few days. I know you don't have an airbrush. But apart from the priming, I'd do exactly as you plan to.

Geek, there's a total of four PE frets n' if I'm gonna use everything there will be more than a lot of bendin'. But much of the PE from the kits fret is duplicated on the Aber frets. But I'll probaly won't use any of the Dragon PE due to the better quality on the Aber PE n' the fact that the grills on the Dragon fret is of the wrong size, incredible that they don't fit the kit. Someone at Dragon have made a major blunder when designing the fret.

But the worst part is that I'm out in deep water when it comes to the PE as I've not done much PE bendin' before.

Hmmm.... I will have a go at making my 1/48 German Pit Stop diorama.

I don't know if it will be finished in time, but you never know what is possible unless you try.

I will try to finish as many of the kits for the diorama as I can.
(And maybe another kit or two I don't have yet to finish it properly.)

Cheers,
Dave

Re: Group Build 6 month- open class (9-1-08) $$PRIZE

OK guys and gals, the latest progress pics. Man, this has been a challenging kit in terms of a bunch of tiny pieces and a lot of flash. A lot of trimming and sanding; and a lot of dry fitting parts, as the locating marks are very subtle (if there at all!). I have the bottom hull pretty much complete.

This first picture shows the props, shafts, and rudders. Man, the shafts were some delicate work, with the coupling braces very unweildy; and one of the prop blades started to snap off, and I had to "repair" it with some steady-handed glue work (but she's solid as a rock, and you'd never tell it by looking at it...success!). Also, the rudder locating holes were ALL too small, and one non-existant, which forced me to enlarge and drill out the holes...the rudders slipped in tight as a glove, so all's well there.

A bit of a farther view on the bottom of the hull...

This old girl is starting to actually resemble a sea-worthy craft, but let's hold back on the bubbly!

Re: Group Build 6 month- open class (9-1-08) $$PRIZE

This next series of pics shows the bits and baubs. This first pic shows the rear lower hull. The little bits weren't so terrible, but the cowling piece needed a lot of coaxing to fit into place. I've become very comfortable with Liquid Glue through this project, so challenge is a good thing. I still use the gel stuff as well...it depends on what I'm attaching and how much I "don't" want of the plastic to melt....

And these next to are side shots of the rear portion of the hull. The toughest little beggars were the search/signal lights! The fitting pins are near non-existant on this kit, and they were real wobbly until an overnight cure. The next day, I dryfitted the flight deck, and bent a light back, as they sit above the lower hull (which I had upside down on the workbench)! ARRRRGH! Surgery saved the day...it glued back upright nicely, and is solid, with absolutely no noticable marks. Guess this is the stuff most modelers hate to admit to, eh?

We're getting there!

Okay... I have started some of the 1/48 figures for the diorama.
(They need to be finished off, but here is the stage where they at now.)

Cheers,
Dave
