Re: The join groups and starting one out topic

I'm with Geek44...still don't get it, I hate to say. I see a function for Social Groups and a function for Group Memberships. Jim O's post seems to link Tommy's idea to the Social Group...what does this do for you? Is it just a collective of members' names, so ypu know who's who in that particular interest? Or is it a link of sorts to "somewhere" you'll be able to go and play (or whathaveyou)? Clarification, pahleeeeez.

Post Re: The join groups and starting one out topic

Baby steps I think, you wanna help WR? I will start a game group for what we have here now, see what happens, then maybe Jim at some point in the future can give us more options for the group or groups that get started.
I hav'nt talked to anyone on this, but that is one way to go, I'm not going to bother anyone now because this will be just starting out, the game group that is.

Cheers, a little clearer now?

Tom

Honestly I enabled them in case people wanted to use them. I think they were designed more for "social" purposes than anything else. One can post messages to a social group so if say there was something of interest to just a few folks, they could create a group to discuss it.

User groups are different. They are the backbone of "privileges" in the forum software. So administrators is one group, super moderators another, moderators yet another; registered users, banned users, and even unregistered users (guests) have different levels of permissions here and those vary by the user group. To further muddy the waters, some user groups are totally private and the membership mostly does not know they exist as they are for administrative purposes. Also, a group can be made "joinable", that is open to anyone, like the "Official Greeters" user group, or may require my action, like the super moderators and moderators groups.

I bet you are sorry you asked...

Re: The join groups and starting one out topic

That's a little clearer for me. I accidentally hit the del.icio.us button and it opened in a tab on my browser. It asked me to create an account but I didn't. Are these kinda like 'sub-forums'? Or forums within a forum kinds of thing but for special interest groups. I'm a big Nachtjagd buff. Say I wanted to start a group to discuss that only, would I then use these functions?
Thanks for the 'help' so far gents...sorry, but we need more.

Re: The join groups and starting one out topic

Nick,

Here's as "dumbed down" as I can go. They are user created groups and can be used for anything that the user likes.

With that in mind there are some limitations. For one thing, any discussion is like a roll of toilet paper. There are no threads as such, just one long discussion.

For a look at what the developers of vBulletin had in mind when they announced them at the beginning of version 3.7 beta cycle, see vBulletin 3.7 First Look! - vBulletin Community Forum.

Re: The join groups and starting one out topic

Well, that answers some questions for me, but I think I'm with Nick in having to see one of these in action before full understanding is met. I like Tommy's idea for a Game Group, but unless I'm reading you wrong Mate, sounds like you're looking for this to be an area to hold online interactive games such as the one we currently have going at the GAme Forum? In which case, I'm not sure this is set up for that, based on the info Jim supplied to us. But I may be totally wrong in that.

I read this as a group awareness system of folks that share a common interets, and want to share quick snips about themselves (or the topic at hand), pictures, stats in a prticular game system (like win/loss totals), and the like. If indeed that is what this is, but want a dedicated area for interactive gaming, perhaps this is something Jim and I can work out in having a subforum to the Game Forum for Interactive Gaming; yet the Game Group area can help direct folks in that direction.

Again, I may have this all totally wrong.

As far as Interactive Gaming goes, we are still kinda new with the Game Forum's recent birth, and it would probably be wise to get a few games off the ground before we devote dedicated space in the form of a subforum to it, not to mention I am sure that things are growing at breakneck speed for Jim at the moment, and I would imagine the prospects of starting new forums/subforums is a bit more than he may be wanting on his plate at the present.

Again, I may be totally wrong in this

I need to understand this whole Grup concept a little better before I can be of any help Tommy, but I'm there for 'ya bud!!!

I think you pretty much understand it as I do. I'm not sure that much will come of it but most times I have said that in life I have been less than 100% correct (like when I couldn't imagine why one would ever need access to the Internet from home ).
