Victory Gardens
What Is a Victory Garden?
Victory gardens were vegetable gardens planted during World War 2 to ensure an adequate food supply for civilians and troops. From California to Florida, Americans plowed backyards, vacant lots, parks, baseball fields, and schoolyards to set out gardens. Throughout the World War II years, millions of victory gardens in all shapes and sizes--from window boxes to community plots--produced abundant food for the folks at home. I know for a fact that the U.S. and U.K. were both big on Victory Gardens, but I am certain that all of the Allied as well as Axis civiliation populations had them as well. ![]() This group of North Carolina 4-H Club Members show that they are with the program! ![]() ![]()
