OK....I need some help (he said, stating the obvious):

I need to know what the difference was between the 105mm vs. 75mm Howitzer artillery pieces were during WWII

I've been doing some searching on the Internet and am coming up short. I am adding miniatures to my 15mm gaming OOB, and I have ordered pieces simply labeled "105mm Howitzer"...no picture, so I don't even know what I ordered, per se. I am assuming it is the 105mm Howitzer M2A1 (M101). What I already have in my collection is several M8 75mm Pack Howitzers which I've found reference to on the web as M1A1, also known as the M116 Howitzer. Confused? I am.

I need some detail on what these guns were, compared to one another.

Which one was more powerful (my guess is the 75mm, from what I've read)?

Did one replace the other in primary use?

Theaters?

And anything else you think may help.

I am trying to determine a COST (in Axis & Allies Miniatures game system terms. For instance: a 37mm Gun M3 costs 5 points and 75mm Pack Howitzer costs 6 points . Where does the 105mm stand?

Now if this weren't asking enough.....I also boiught some 57mm Gun M1!!! Same questions.....

Oh, about 30 millimeters...

It would seem that the biggest difference is size/mobility. That would apparently be the biggest difference, besides the above stated obvious.

The 75mm pack howitzer is a light air portable and is easy to move around , most likely seen with mountain or airborne troops. The 105mm howitzer , is bigger all around and requires more to move and would be seen at a higher level for artillery support.

Though not being a "gunner" size does matter, bigger the better.

The standard WW2 105mm field howitzer (M101) fired a 14.97 kg high explosive shell at 472 meters per second out to a range of 11,160 meters.

The 75mm pack howitzer (M1) fired a 6.62 kg high explosive shell at 381 meters per second out to a range of 8,790 meters.

The 105 is bigger and much badder.

Well, by definition 105mm IS bigger than 75mm.

Badder? All depends on your definition... the 75mm is a really small gun and you can sneak them into the tightest spots. much less metal to lug around.

The 105mm is a fairly substantial piece....ouch time for the other side.

Bigger and Badder sounds like a good approximation to me. In gaming terms anything up to and including 105's is even shooting. As you go bigger - 122ish you get a plus, then for 140 to 155 a bigger plus (more pain to throw).
