In 1992, aboard HMS Andromeda(F57), we were part of 'Stanaforlant' (Standard Naval Force Atlantic). We were sent to the Adriatic Sea, in preparation of boarding ships that would not comply with rules or were suspected of carrying guns, drugs or any other contriband! In the Ionian Sea, we were about 10 miles off the coast. Here I remember being up on deck on watch, watching tracer and explosions as 2 sides slugged it out, trying to destroy each other.
In the early hours of one morning, I remember the crew in the Ops room, they were carrying out system operator checks (socs!), our Seawolf radar system kicked in and started tracking a ship, with that our electronic warfare guys started shouting, saying that this warship had picked up the radar signal and had locked on to us, this warship was a Yugoslavian Split class destroyer! After talking and trying to calm the situation, we called for back up, in came the cavalry, hey presto! Our local friendly American warship (Leahy class...I think!) steamed in between us, the Split destroyer did a 180 and steamed away quickly.
In 1993, HMS Andromeda was decommissioned from RN service, she was sold to the Indian Navy, were she was commissioned INS Krishna, in the early part of this year HMS Andromeda/ INS Krishna was decommissioned for the last time, never to sail the high seas again.
With 47 years of active service under her keel, that's not a bad service the old girl had done. image.jpg 99.36KB 3 downloads

USN 1979-1985, worked in the engineroom. Only exciting thing we did (just coincidentally, we were Leahy class, as well! CG-18, USS Worden) was during a disagreement with Vietnam over international waters. We cruised half a mile outside the recognized limits, waiting to see if they'd shoot at us.
1985-1999, USMC, did a Med float aboard an LST, and a deployment to Okinawa. That included wargames in Korea as well as a trip to Iwo Jima. During the Gulf War, I ahd gone to sea duty, so I was Marine Detachment aboard USS John F. Kennedy.

We so often forget about you guys keeping the peace out there. Thank you.
Why is patience a virtue? Why can't "hurry the f*** up" be a virtue?

I joined the military back on September 22, 1987, after basic training and trades school served with the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) for 22 years. The Regiment is the heavy Panzer unit, but I served 16 years in and out of the Reconnaissance Squadron before the Boss said enough you are having way to much fun playing hide and seek. I have served in the Middle East 88/89, Former Yugoslavia 94/97/98/2000, and Afghanistan 2002/2007/2009.....
I have worked with the USMC for 3.5 months in California, British Royal Marines in the middle east/ Yugoslavia ( passed the jump course...., French Marines in Yugoslavia , and many other countries and I would work with them anytime in a heart beat.
I have shed blood, sweat, and tears and fought on battlefields of old and new, and I am surprised that I am still walking and talking.
For me my home was my Panzer, and every once and awhile I get to visit the old unit , and the smell of the tank barns put a big smile on my face.......
Ex-Panzercommander kicking it for 26 years, served my time in the sandbox, retired a champ.......

Joined the USMC in 1981. Retired in 2002. Spent the first half as a cannoneer. Last half as a Forward Observer. Throw in a few years as an instructor and a couple as a tac nuc guy.
Went to a few cool places like Grenada, Beirut, Former Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone, Haiti, Gitmo, ect. The 80s and 90s were pretty fun time to be in 2dMarDiv
