I have been given a box of models, mostly 1/72nd WWII planes. I have mentioned these elsewhere but I would now like some ideas on what to do with them. They range from good condition minus propeller blades for most to a couple in really bad shape.

Some are missing tail wings, some cockpit glass and so on.

I will post a couple of pics soon.

If anyone has any ideas on how to refurbish them or some other method for making them useful please feel free to post your ideas.

Thanks.

Well, if they're only missing propellers, a disc of clear plastic and some string to hang it from the ceiling would put it in flight.

Other than that, use the banged up ones for crash vignettes, or use them to bump up your scratch-building skills!

Thanks Tom. I can't really hang them from the ceiling though, and as far as bumping up skills, the only thing I can scratch without looking is my ar....m.

Still - the prop thought gives me an idea I might try. Thanks. You're a genius.

If you have a couple of spinners with props broken off you could cut prop blades off one and attach to another to make one good one. If there 1/72 I'm thinking there probably molded as one piece. Cut one prop blade off right down on the spinner, clean up your "good' spinner and attach. Might need to sand one or two into shape but thats easy enough.

Thanks Hagen. I'll have a better look at them.

I'm gonna guess Revell. Its usually a hit or miss with them. DO the ones that look good in quality. Those that aren't you can use for scrap parts for a seperate project OR (if you really want to impress me..which really isn't hard) put some of the bad stuff on the good stuff and make a battle scene out of it.

TRDG and Waffle - good thoughts - maybe I could have a German plane crash land on a Russian tank or two ?

Good idea but I think there's only one Russian plane in the whole lot.

Umm... don't know the brand sorry.

I think it's an LA5 or whatever, the one you posted the pic for in the fighter thread. Also, come to think of it, there is a twin engine bomber as well.

Those are hard to find kits of mate...if it's an La5...it's probably by 'Zvezda' or maybe ICM. If it's by 'Gavia' it's a gem and highly sought after in Oz. Gavia are the only folks to release a 1/48 Westland Lysander. I really want one of these kits and have only seen one once on eBay. I think it sold for around $80 which is pricey for a 1/48 aircraft kit. The twin engined type may be a Petlyakov Pe 2...Airfix?
Thanks MAG.

That's an old classic too mate. I seem to remember Soviet, Polish and Czech marking included in the Airfix kit. It's a beautiful aircraft I think...very fast too.

With all those 1/72 wrecks, you could do a "Aeroplane Boneyard" diorama.

It wouldn't matter what parts are missing from the models you have.
(But the pilots and aircrews would have to come out of them.)

Cheers,
Dave

Unfortunately a lack of display space precludes much in the way of dioramicness around these environs (sorry - Just heard the Prime Minister bunging on on the news..).

I may still have a go at Tom H's method and maybe the wreck idea will fit in too.

I think this thing is an LA-5F since there is no supercharger on the nose. It's painted with a red nose ring and a yellow diagonal top on the tail. It seems to have an awful lot of kill stars too.

There is another weird looking twin engine seaplane in this lot too. It has oval engines. In fact I think it might have an undercarriage for landing on snow. Looks like some kind of Antonov I think.

Sounds like Antonov or even Beriev. What a collection mate!
