For once the USMC didn't have to use cast off equipment from the army as they quite simply refused to use the French Chauchatt (probably the worst firearm ever to be produced) so the amry got stuck with the Chauchatt.

They are members of the 38th Infantry Division at Mézy (now known as Mézy-sur-Seine) in France. The photo is from July 21, 1918.

This infamous photo alleged to be of the Reaper rising from a shell burst on the Western Front caused a stir when it appeared in print in England and the United States in 1916.

It was later determined that the prints were in fact made from a marriage of three negatives; one of the dead soldier, one of the shell blast and the third of unknown origin.

It is spooky. The face of the "Reaper" looks like it was inspired by the painting "The Scream" by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch.
