Hi Gary, how's tricks. It's been a while so i thought i'd pop by. It'd be great if you could resurrect the Mossie mate, hope you can. I like the idea of cutting away the Marauder as well cos the work you are doing on that is superb. All the best. Chris.

Thx matey I appreciate that, I'm actually considering making it a project to rebuild it, if I can get a replacement canopy for it I can probably patch it up. I like rebuilding old models and I've only scavenged a few parts from it, I can remake those, if all depends if I can manage to get the seams well enough, I still have the paint I used, I can probably blend that in. Who knows, watch this space as they say.

Yeah that's about the size of it, run a cocktail stick along the raised sections so the tape sits down in to the creases then get a new blade if you can and cut round each section. Then you gently lift the tape off and voila masked canopies.

So I should just take pieces of tamiya tape and press down then run the blade around? Sounds easy enough..

Yeah but it doesn't matter as it will form the edge of the paint and you won't see it anyway. Besides with time you get to know the amount of pressure it takes to cut through just the tape and not hit the plastic (too much). It's how I do all my canopies, I've started using my magnifiing headset to get even finer mask lines.

When cutting the tape couldn't I risk scratching the plastic?

gaz it a freaking nightmare to get into that place the traffic is horrendous they still use the little lanes round the airport boundary to filter the traffic in and out, i can walk there in 15 mins from where i live, but what i do i take the dog with me and a bit of a picnic and find a nice spot on a hill that virtuly over looks the place and watch it for nothing, i could even stay at home as they fly right over where i live and dont you know it even the tiles on the roof shake when those jets are about thanks for the chat micky.

Thanks RAF.. for possible clarification, lets say i'm shooting for light streaking. Like, it's visible and is there but not that of the P61. On some libs exhaust I just saw a few thin streaks coming from the vents, i'm guessing thats how it came to look on the top wing?

It all depends on the story of your Lib. How many missions had she flown, were did she operate from, were they high altitude missions (for the most part USAAF Libs were high level strategic). Taking off under load puts a lot of strain on the engines so it would be a rich mix on take off, high altitude would be a thinner mix. So it's hard to say really, I'd go for a dark stain thinning off on the edges to a light grey or brown. Sort of black in the center then brown then grey/white and filter overspray each. I'd spray black and thin it out to the edges then overspray with a thin layer of brown and dust over that with light grey.

Hey gary, that time for exhaust on the lib will be coming up soon. May I ask what color D's burnt and the usual shape of the exhaust. Not many reference pics of the sort and the master would know! Thanks, C

That's a tough one mate, I don't have any photos in my collection. I may have something in one of my books. Your best bet is to head over to Aircraft of World War II nice bunch and very knowledgable about aviation, if one of them doesn't have what you want they will know where to get it. I'll keep looking but don't hold your breath, now if it'd been a Liberator photo........ :D
