It gets in your blood.....

Okay my turn I suppose. My mum used to get me books when she went to the bigger town down the road
which wasn't that often. I was about nine or so then. One particular time she couldn't find anything I might
like and the place she was at sold Airfix kits as well. So there it was, a Supermarine Spitfire and some glue.
This was really interesting. A bit of a write up on the history. Pictures to show how to put it together, and
all the little sticker things that came off in water to put on after. Wow!! Then I saw something about paint
colours and that was it.

At the same time my cousin had started collecting Airfix HO/OO military kits and figures. They were a lot
to buy as were the planes but a bit of lawnmowing and bottle collecting fixed that. 65 cents was a lot to
fork out for a kit but it was always worth it. Over the next four years the collection grew. More planes, tanks,
guns and figures. In that time I discovered there were manufacturers other than Airfix!! Off we go again.

By the time I was in my first year of high school the interest was starting to turn to Motorbikes and those
things that spread girl germs. The models all went to my friends little brothers and that was it. Addiction
over - or so I thought.

Move forward six years and the reformed addict sees a new hobby shop in town. In I go for a look and
out I come with a massive fix. Models, glue, paints, the lot. Then the wargaming. More kits and figures.
Damn things had gone up to $1.90 each!!

Onward to Napoleonics. A few hundred figures later and the interest waned again. Kids, computer
courses at the College, then work. Step forward about ten years and I go into a software wholesaler
in Perth. They were also the major distributor in the state for Tamiya kits which I hadn't really noticed.
I come out with a JagdPanther and some other 1/35th stuff which I hadn't really done much of. I got
them because they were at the wholesale price which is amazingly low.

Since then I have got back into wargaming which means 1/72nd stuff as 15mm WWII wasn't around
and the occasional dabble with 1/35th. I had never been happy with 1/35th - they just didn't come
out the way Shep Paine's did. I am much more enthused now due to all the help and hints I get here -
and that's the only reason I have bothered with the scale again, so thanks must go to the enthusiastic
modellers here as well as all those who supply the excellent information and pictures. Give yourselves
a pat on the back (not the one you get from standing behind a cow).

I would also like to master the guitar someday but time and ability are holding things up. I am
proficient with four other instruments but it's always that other one you can't get that is the one you
really want. A bit like model kits I s'pose.

Cripes Geek - I didn't expect anyone to actually read this. Thanks about the guitar time but when I do I can tell you it isn't something you want to hear.

Do you have a favourite style or whatever with the guitar? What sort of guitar do you favour?

Re: It gets in your blood.....

Everybody says that about their own playing mate.
Over the years I've had maybe a dozen guitars...been playing since I was 17. I always wanted one but my parents thought it would be a flash in the pan. I had to wait until I could buy my own.
I used to play electric mostly...I was in the worst band in the world for a while. My est was a black Les Paul Standard which was the most beautiful instrument I'd ever held until I bought my Iwata airbrush. I was busy learning as much Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Hendrix...all that kind of stuff, as I could. These days, I don't play much because I'm busy with my models or my son wants to play too. When the kids are in bed, it's too loud. I have a beaten up old Yamaha 12 string that I got for my 21st from my parents...my son's been 'playing' it so it needs serious attention. I recently bought a beautiful acoustic 6 string by Breedlove. I'd never heard of them but I went back to my old workplace to get it. I hooked up with one of my old mates who works in the guitar shop, gave him a price range and he showed me three guitars. Martin, Maton and the Breedlove. It's nice and compares quite favourably with another friend's Maton at nearly 80% of the price.
I like something from all music genres...I find 'Gangsta Rap' hard to care about though.

Re: It gets in your blood.....

Ahhh.... real music. I know what you mean about the rap stuff. My son has a Maton which is far superior to my Samick steel string. Even I can play better with that one, not that I've ever got very far - at his stage I am just getting to the fourth string in the book.

I admire good musicians even more now that I know how much goes into it all. All my sons have gone into music which is great by me. A drummer, a guitarist, and a base guitarist. When the two older ones were home we had no flies, mossies, mice.... neighbours .... they got rid of everything. I hope your young bloke gets into playing music. It's such an achievement and as you know stays with you for life.

Re: It gets in your blood.....

I harbour a small hope that he picks up one of the things I'm into. But of course he may take after his Mum and be more 'sporty'. Either way, it's going to be his choice.
There's something good to be found in all music genres...well almost. I used to be a purist to the point of stupidity. There are those who would say 'real music' is Beethoven and Mozart and that Hendrix was a drugged up hippie.
I've even been known to tap my foot to some techno occasionally.

Re: It gets in your blood.....

Too true. Nothing worse than musical snobs but if I don't like something, I don't like it. There are even Zeppelin songs I don't like so I don't listen to them. That's the beauty of it though, we have the variety and the choice. Sporty can fit in with musical too. The two oldest played footy etc. in their teens as well as the show riding from early ages and managed to get hooked on the music as well. It's like Pantene, may not happen overnight but it will happen (highly probable anyway).

I know mate. I once caused a party to stop and stare because I claimed the version of 'Moby Dick' done by The Cruel Sea was far better than Zeppelin's version. I stand by that assertion too. It swings while the Zeppelin effort is stodgy like porridge.
Now the big question; 'Voodoo Child'...Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan?

I would have to say that the answer to the big question is so obvious it doesn't even require the commission set up to make recommendations on a possible answer, even so we are waiting for the commission to table it's recommendations after a suitable period of deliberation which will then be acted upon in the relevant manner according to the principals and conditions of the brief given to the said committee at the outset of the said committee's tenure of control over the brief ....... this answer has been necessarily brief and for further information please start again at the beginning of this paragraph.
