New Music for Old Ears

So, I go and ask the young soldiers what they listen to so that I can download some music. Here is a small list of what I have listened to now:

Down with the Sickness- Disturbed
Let the Bodies Hit the Floor- Drowning Pool
Die MotherF*cker Die- Dope

So now I am a fan (sort of) of this music.

Whatever happened to The Donnas, Seether, Orgy.???
Dare I ask about Fleetwood Mac, Matt Mays and El Torpedo (Cocaine Cowgirl)
Golden Earing??

Re: New Music for Old Ears

Well I was lucky enough to give my 14 year old daughter a 'little payback' this evening on our drive from Ottawa to Peterborough, about 3 1/2 hour drive.

My CD selections included....
a 17 track CD of Bag Pipe music... including Amazing Grace.
a burned CD with the Jackson 5, Twisted Sister, Classic 70's Sonny and Cher ect
a few other torturous CDs from the 70's.

Maybe next time she will think twice when I ask her NOT to play Rhianna quite so loud in her bedroom.

Re: New Music for Old Ears

My two and a half year old son is really into Van Halen (not with Sammy Hagar), Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac and even Hendrix and Zeppelin.
IMO, there's actually not much 'good' new music that gets really popular. I'm probably showing my age it's true. The usual 'pop' types are just rubbish and I see many 'rock stars' that pay more attention to being 'rock stars' than to being musicians. It's funny how all those 'music' types have a similar look. It's kinda like a uniform. Maaan.
It's all subjective though. I really like some of the 'crap' too.

Sniper I don't know how you can listen to it. Though admittedly those are like the Pump up songs the grunts like to listen to. But still I despise most modern music. Anything I'm into has to have a little thought to it, good lyrics, and good instrumentals or its not going to be listened to. And frankly with that criteria I just wiped out most of the pop industry :P

Re: New Music for Old Ears

What's wrong with 'ol music for 'ol ears? Music really was better in the past... In my mind music have a "Best after 20 years" qualitymark. If it's still good after 20 or so years then it's great music. How much of todays music will be remembered even in five years mate?

Re: New Music for Old Ears

I dunno guys...Britney's 'Oops I Did It Again' and anything by Shakira should last. It's definitely up there.
But seriously, gone are the days when even 'pop' music was good quality. The Beatles early stuff ('I Wanna Hold Your Hand', 'Please Please Me' etc.) had craftsmanship and IMO 'Dancing Queen' by Abba is a work of genius. But in those days, the music industry was more music and less industry. It's not about art anymore, it's all $$$$$$$. Seen any ugly musicians lately? (Amy Winehouse I'll grant you but she's got something good going on ie. some real ability). I'm so with gi-rene on this one.
What about 'Nevermind' by Nirvana? A hyped up load of crap or a ground-breaking album? I can't decide but I still like it.

Re: New Music for Old Ears

Well Nirvana won't hold it 'gainst their inspirational artist, the Grandfather of the grunge, mr. Neil Young himself...

Re: New Music for Old Ears

This is new to me McCoy, I'm open minded...can you explain?
Not a fan of Mr. Young myself...he sounds whiney to me.
Nobody really talks about Nirvana or even Cobain now...maybe he's gone AND forgotten.

'Here's one, he likes all our pretty songs and he likes to sing along and he likes to shoot his gun. But he don't know what it means'.

Neil did some records in the seventies with a sound that greatly resembles the Grunge sound that Nirvana "pioneered" n' Curt Cobain was a fan of Neil.

This two songs from Rust Never Sleeps is part of the Grunge herritage, allthough the first song isn't totaly freaked out with distin' guitars.

"My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)"

My my, hey hey
Rock and roll is here to stay
It's better to burn out
Than to fade away
My my, hey hey.

Out of the blue
and into the black
They give you this,
but you pay for that
And once you're gone,
you can never come back
When you're out of the blue
and into the black.

The king is gone
but he's not forgotten
This is the story
of a Johnny Rotten
It's better to burn out
than it is to rust

The king is gone
but he's not forgotten.

Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.

Is the bold lines in the lyrics lookin' familiar for you that likes Cobain?
