War inspired songs n' lyrics
A songs lyrics is worth a lot for me when I listen to music n' over the years more than a few of those songs from various artists have been 'bout war in some way or another. So here's a great place to share those songs with the rest of you. I'm starting with the lyrics that my signature comes from.
When the Tigers broke free - Pink Floyd YouTube - When The Tigers Broke Free (complete)It was just before dawn One miserable morning in black 'forty four. When the forward commander Was told to sit tight When he asked that his men be withdrawn. And the Generals gave thanks As the other ranks held back The enemy tanks for a while. And the Anzio bridgehead Was held for the price Of a few hundred ordinary lives. And kind old King George Sent Mother a note When he heard that father was gone. It was, I recall, In the form of a scroll, With gold leaf and all. And I found it one day In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away. And my eyes still grow damp to remember His Majesty signed With his own rubber stamp. It was dark all around. There was frost in the ground When the tigers broke free. And no one survived From the Royal Fusiliers Company C. They were all left behind, Most of them dead, The rest of them dying. And that's how the High Command Took my daddy from me.

1916 - Motorhead 16 years old when I went to war, To fight for a land fit for heroes, God on my side, and a gun in my hand, Counting my days down to zero, And I marched and I fought and I bled And I died & I never did get any older, But I knew at the time, That a year in the line, Is a long enough life for a soldier, We all volunteered, And we wrote down our names, And we added two years to our ages, Eager for life and ahead of the game, Ready for history's pages, And we fought and we brawled And we whored 'til we stood, Ten thousand shoulder to shoulder, A thirst for the Hun, We were food for the gun, and that's What you are when you're soldiers, I heard my friend cry, And he sank to his knees, coughing blood As he screamed for his mother And I fell by his, side, And that's how we died, Clinging like kids to each other, And I lay in the mud And the guts and the blood, And I wept as his body grew colder, And I called for my mother And she never came, Though it wasn't my fault And I wasn't to blame, The day not half over And ten thousand slain, and now There's nobody remembers our names And that's how it is for a soldier. YouTube - 1916

Re: War inspired songs n' lyrics
Ragged old flag - Johnny Cash I walked through a county courthouse square, On a park bench an old man was sitting there. I said, "Your old courthouse is kinda run down." He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town." I said, "Your old flagpole has leaned a little bit, And that's a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it." He said, "Have a seat," and I sat down. "Is this the first time you've been to our little town?" I said, "I think it is." He said, "I don't like to brag, But we're kinda proud of that Ragged Old Flag. "You see, we got a little hole in that flag there when Washington took it across the Delaware. And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key Sat watching it writing Say Can You See. And it got a bad rip in New Orleans With Packingham and Jackson tuggin' at its seems. "And it almost fell at the Alamo Beside the Texas flag, but she waved on though. She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill. There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg, And the south wind blew hard on that Ragged Old Flag. "On Flanders Field in World War I She got a big hole from a Bertha gun. She turned blood red in World War II. She hung limp and low by the time it was through. She was in Korea and Vietnam. She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam. "She waved from our ships upon the briny foam, And now they've about quit waving her back here at home. In her own good land here she's been abused -- She's been burned, dishonored, denied, and refused. "And the government for which she stands Is scandalized throughout the land. And she's getting threadbare and wearing thin, But she's in good shape for the shape she's in. 'Cause she's been through the fire before And I believe she can take a whole lot more. "So we raise her up every morning, take her down every night. We don't let her touch the ground and we fold her up right. On second thought, I do like to brag, 'Cause I'm mighty proud of the Ragged Old Flag." YouTube - Ragged Old Flag

or....how bout Crimea?
5. The Trooper [Harris] You'll take my life but I'll take yours too You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through So when you're waiting for the next attack You'd better stand there's no turning back. The Bugle sounds and the charge begins But on this battlefield no one wins The smell of acrid smoke and horses breath As I plunge on into certain death. The horse he sweats with fear we break to run The mighty roar of the Russian guns And as we race towards the human wall The screams of pain as my comrades fall. We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground And the Russians fire another round We get so near yet so far away We won't live to fight another day. We get so close near enough to fight When a Russian gets me in his sights He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow A burst of rounds take my horse below. And as I lay there gazing at the sky My body's numb and my throat is dry And as I lay forgotten and alone Without a tear I draw my parting groan.
