Re: The Freakin' Bears Thread

Yes, I am. Which is fine with me so long as they stop eating my grills.

Get a cat then so you can scare 'em away...

Re: The Freakin' Bears Thread

Where would I get a 800 pound cat? Besides, I have pit bull. I just have to camouflage her so she can take them by surprise.

It's enough with a 8 pound cat to chase a bear away...

I wasn't complaining, just stating a fact. Though they did like to eat my perennials.

We evidently have foxes too. A neighbor of mine set a trap because a feral cat was terrorizing the little nesting birdies in his yard and he caught a red fox.

When I lived in the woods we had coyotes and foxes but they mostly stayed away from my yard. Something about the smell of dog urine I think.

Re: The Freakin' Bears Thread

A large dog in the yard will help keep the bears away unless the bear is very sick or hungry. I do not know if children are present that certainly could have an impact. My experience with black bears is that they will flee if they hear you coming. At the same time bears can be quite destructive if you do not bear proof.

In general I agree about not wanting to shooting them however it may come to that point, to me any human life trumps any other lifeform. If you are careful it need likely not come to that.

To be honest Pat, a lot of this is just joking around. Where I live we have a large black bear population, but they are more of an annoyance/amusement than a threat.

Every spring they drive me nuts, and I usually start a running thread with lots of exaggeration and photos.

Heidi and I have lived here 20 years and have learned to co-exist with them without having to resort to harming them (OK, i did hit one on the head with a candle once, but I just bought that bird feeder and he asked for it).

We have watched from our deck as mother sow have raised cubs with as much a loving touch as any human mother, and in some cases more.

So this just my place to rant my frustrations over busted grills, turned over trash and stolen steaks with lighthearted threats and lies (they have yet to steal a steak).

Re: The Freakin' Bears Thread

I assume that is file photo and not taken by you or your wife.

Re: The Freakin' Bears Thread

That is in fact file. Getting too close to mom and cub is too close for us. But I'm looking through my photos for a shot of my wife holding an orphaned cub we found under our deck a few years back.

The sow was struck and killed by a truck down the road from us.

The cub was turned over to the game commission and placed in the care of a local rehabber.
