Aussie Slang Dictionary

I've been seeing a little bit of 'Aussiefication' going down among the non-Aussie membership here with the use of the word 'mate' being used in a very Aussie way by some. Rather than claiming some silly 'ownership' of such material based solely on the geographic location of my birth, I wholeheartedly encourage the practice. Further, I'd like to add a short lexicon here that I hope to expand on as I remember things. Other folks should feel free to contribute...there's some variation from east to west, north to south. Feel free to ask questions too. I'll be honest and say that I've learned to use 'net English' on the US based sites. Basically, I speak differently to the way I type...I s'pose that's true of everyone though. Peace.

Bogan - (Rhymes with 'Logan') Best described as 'trailer-trash' but they usually live in houses here.

Fair Dinkum - Honest, true, loyal, genuine, proper, you get the picture.

To do one's lolly, block, rag - To lose one's temper.

Fair Go - Fair chance. Can be used as a complaint...'Oh, fair go mate!' but there's an older Aussie value that everybody deserves a fair go.

Have a lash - Give something a try.

Flat out - At top speed.

Gave 'em a bath - Defeated them...usually in sport.

Biffo - Fist fighting.

Chuck a wobbly - Lose one's temper.

Chuck a sickie - Calling in to work sick without being sick.

People with red hair are called 'Blue' or 'Bluey'. People who have two 'first names' as their name...eg, John Bruce or Mike Steven or Bruce Michael are nicknamed 'Smithy'. And I now put forward a theory I've been keeping among my closest circle of friends for maybe seven years...in Australia, every person here either knows, or knows somebody who knows, a guy named 'Simmo'.
Peace.

OK, I'm taking notes for the chat room. I heard one last night that took me by surprise. "Spinner", meaning a bit nuts.

Well I sure like to use the word "Mate" as I do like it n' feel that it's a relaxed word n' I've used it a long time, probably as long as I've used the word "Bugger", now, there's a versatile word ain't it mates!

As opposed to being "on the rag" which has a similar connotation although it typically applies to hormonal females.

Definitely not a "PC" expression here.

Not me, chum! I've actually gotten in trouble for using that line, not knowing a female was standing nearby.

Re: Aussie Slang Dictionary

Being a redhead, I have been called Bluey by some co-workers. What else can I come up with...

I had a big prang....I had a big wreck

She's a goer....She's a loose woman (I have not been called this one!)

On the piss...gettin' drunk

Cobber...friend

Sepo...septic tank yank...American (I love rhyming slang...ooh, ooh ne thread time)

Okay, I am off to start a new thread!

Silly Yanks, we tend to call redheads red, carrot top, or even freckles, or something like that...
