Re: old tobacco tin

No idea. But I have some questions. Are there any stamps on it? Maybe on the back or the inside...particularly '925' or 'stg sil' The stamps may provide clues to a maker or place of manufacture. If it has either of the above mentioned stamps, it's made of silver. (My Dad was a jeweller so I have the odd insight). Stamps may be cunningly concealed...check the hinges and places like that also.
Peace.

Re: old tobacco tin

Mate, the first thing that came to my mind was Paris...kinda looked like the arch de Triumph (I know I probably got that spelling wrong)

Re: old tobacco tin

Hmmmm, that could workout as origins to France then? If all else fails, have you considered bringing it to an antiques dealer for their opinion?

Re: old tobacco tin

If it was for British soldiers it would be Marble Arch, not the arc de triumph.

Marble Arch

The canon on the front also looks like the Royal Artillery cap badge.

Cap Badge

Not much help but supports what you have been told.
