Re: tobacco prices
Few roll their own tobacco cigarettes here in the US. Name brand prices vary by state as each state has different tax rates.
In New York City, a name brand like Marlboro or Newport might be $7 for a pack of 20. Here in tobacco country in Virginia it is more like $3. See State Tax Rates on Cigarettes for the differences in tax rates per pack.

Re: tobacco prices
In the Uk it is about 6 pounds ($12) for a packet of 20 (I think, maybe more now!).
Here in Latvia it varies on brand. I smoke Kent and they are 1.50LVL ($3). The price of Ciggies here has double in the 3 years I have been in Latvia. The UK has the most expensive ciggies in the EU and Latvia has the cheapest.

Lots of people roll their own here. Champion Ruby is the most popular...it's kinda cool as it has a Roman gladiator on the packet. There's tons of tax on Aussie ciggies. A pretty stupid governmental attempt to make people quit. All it does is make people poor. My theory is that if tobacco was free, all the same people would smoke and the same non-smokers wouldn't. I used to smoke a pack of 25 a day for 25 years. My parents did too. Until about three years ago, I could say that I'd smoked since conception. I'm sure that it will shorten my life despite having quit (mostly) for three years. I'm forty. Both my parents died from smoking related illnesses. I still crave them sometimes but not every day. I don't drink much alcohol so that makes it much easier. It's more psychological than physical I think.

Re: tobacco prices
Here where I live the price of a 25 pack of smokes varies from $10.00- $13.00 for name brands. I smoke the lesser names and usually $7.25-$7.75 depending again on where I buy them.
My habit is somewhat varied as well. Some days I will smoke 1/2- 3/4 of a pack on average, up to 2 packs in a day. It all depends on what I have going on. If I'm driving by myself, its the higher end.
