Thats back when it was better recognized as "Victory" though I bet the UK was doing it Tongue in Cheek.

I you go to England or France I strongly advice you not to confuse that gesture with the V for victory gesture...

Re: what type of car do you own

McCoy is quite correct, it stems from the campaign of Henry V in France, about the time of Agincourt in 1415AD. It was the practice of the French to cut off the two fingers of any captured longbowmen. Namely the index and middle fingers of the right hand, this prevented use of a longbow at war draw weights.

So after any successful action the victorious 'English' longbowmen would display their fingers to the French as a form of insult, which is still in practice today.

(Use the term 'English' even though the forces fighting for the English King were of various origins.)

Last one I saw up close and personal was at the Colmbus Ohio 4th of July Parade last year...and what a nice looking rig it was, too...though the exhaust fumes must have killed the marching band behind it!

Re: what type of car do you own

I drive an 05 Ford Ranger Edge 4X4, black extend cab. 4.0 ltr engine 4:10 gearing, I love the power and towing capacity, just hate the fuel economy.

My wife has an 08 Suzuki SX4 sedan. She loves the little pop can. I must admit that it handles very very well and good on fuel.

Yes I was quite aware of that hence the "Tongue-in-cheek" comment.

Though I'd heard the whole insult thing was a myth... Forgot where.

Re: what type of car do you own

Jim O,

Good post........ with Winston who knows, it was probably dependant upon how much he'd had to drink that day, hinted at by the cheeky smile.

If it is a myth or not....... if you ever visit old Blighty try using the 'V' sign to some of the locals to guage what reaction you'd receive as to its meaning.
