Re: Things that go BOOM!

is it just me? or does this photo look odd? I would expect that if that shell had been fired, there would have been some markings on the shell? Also would it not have been burried deep into the ground? Lastly....it does not seem to have any impact damage.

Someone please tell me more about this photo.

It is indeed a real 16" dud. I don'r recall at the moment from where but it's probably Peleliu.

Done a hasty research on it n' it seems that the picture is taken at Saipan.

Re: Things that go BOOM!

You can tell the shell has been fired by the rifling grooves in the sealing ring at the base of the shell. In an unfired shell, that ring would be smooth.

Excellent observation P-Drakk! That is true. That ring was meant to give the projoe twist when it came in contact with the lands and grooves.

Re: Things that go BOOM!

Or, it could be a rather invasive suppository. Of course, the rifling grooves would be from something completely different. And in that case, it really makes you wonder what he's checking for in his shoe.
