Caught in the middle

Bears to the left of me, a pit bull to the right.

Been gone a few days because I'm nursing a fractured ankle.

All Saturday night Trudi our dog was in bear alert mode. Running from window to window ruffing and growling. She does this when bear are active around the house.

At about 1:30 Sunday morning she was in the front window of our greeting room when she went ballistic. I had had just about enough and clicked on the floodlights and opened the front door to chase off whatever was out there.

What I found were two young black bear in the front yard about six feet from the door. The sudden light and sound of the door opening startled them and they started flee, but in the general direction of the door and me. This was all Trudi had to see. She bolted for the open front door.

Now, this dog has more guts than brains. Though these two young bear were small but had a combined 400 pounds on her and twice the teeth. I reached out and hooked my left hand onto her collar.

A 95 pound motivated pit bull is a powerful animal. Her thrust was such that she spun me around and I slammed my right ankle against the steel leg of a miter saw table. Still I managed to hold onto the collar, pull her in and get the door closed.

Both bear ran like hell.

I'm on vikaden, my foot is swelled in size enough to rival that of Fred Flintstone and I may not be on as much in the next few days.

Trudi is walking around with ears hung low and bringing squeak toys and bones to my beside to try and make up.

Her and I need to have a long talk about where she needs to draw the line on bears.

That sucks Paul. I hope you feel better. Broken bones and crutches are no fun.

Oh man Paul...that sucks! I'm glad Trudi is alright.....I'm sure if she got to the bears, it would not have ended well mate. Good job on taking a bullet for her...or in this case, a mier saw table. Your a good man, Charlie Brown! Hope you mend quick...you've had a bad time of it, my friend.

Re: Caught in the middle

I'm fine. I opted for an aircast, but still since my desk is L shaped with modular books cases underneath I have no place to extend my leg, so its uncomfortable.

Plus the Vikes are putting me to sleep every few hours.

Trudi is a good dog. She didn't go on the attack until she thought the bear were coming at me and not just turning to run, plus the bear were just being bear, so all is forgiven.

Re: Caught in the middle

Mate...I'm really sorry about your ankle but I have mixed feelings about 'the incident'. Like yourself, I live among the fauna (no bears though) and I'm grateful for the priviledge. Part of me is glad that the injury occurred because of some beautiful animals rather than a traffic accident or criminals. I think you'll know where I'm coming from here.
Best wishes on a speedy recovery from both of us mate and please give that beautiful dog a hug and kiss from me.
Peace.

Re: Caught in the middle

I'm still trying to figure out who has a mitre saw in this "greeting room"?? I'm wondering if Heidi didn't find out about Bisquit and had him trapped in the garage!!

Re: Caught in the middle

Still remodeling the house. Saws and other large objects usually not found in the home are everywhere. Just my luck to hit one.
