The Panzer IV Project

The Patton Museum at Fort Knox, Kentucky recently received, in a trade, a Panzer IV G (F2) from the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. I volunteered to be project manager on this endeavor. Please go to AFTA Index to see photos of its arrival and the first work day. As the project progresses, I will post new info and photos. The Panzer IV will be cosmetically restored and displayed in the museum by the end of May.

On the site you will see other projects, special events and information on the museum and volunteer program. Hope you enjoy.

Garry

Interesting photos, Garry!! I actually wish I could go play, even though I graduated from the Tim Taylor School of Home Repair!!

While I literally cringed when I saw those screens on the side of the vehicle, I can see the value of something like that. I DON'T like the idea of cutting a tank up, but allowing visual access to the interior is a damned good idea! Plexiglass, mayhap?

Are you planning on making it a runner, or just aesthetically pleasing static? What unit? I have some spare decals downstairs!

Tim Taylor probably know more than I do.

It will just be done cosmetically inside and out, just what the public can see. We will put Plexiglas over the openings. When the museum got the Tiger II from Aberdeen many years ago, it also had the sides cut out. The insides were restored as much as possible and Plexiglas put over the openings. Although I prefer my tanks complete, it does allow the public to see interiors that they normally wouldn't be able to see.

Re: The Panzer IV Project

I rember this tank fondly from my two trips to Aberdeen. I'm so glad this tank is getting the treatment it deserves! As indicated in the photos, the insides are horribly rusted as are many of the tanks at Aberdeen. 50 years of rain and humidity haven't done these tanks any good. They should all be restored and kept indoors for posterity.

I'm looking forward to the results of the restoration!!!
