That would be my guess. The normal charge in a shell wouldn't have enough forces to overpressure the gun tube unless you plugged the end of the barrel.

Correct you are sir. This was the 1939 Cadillac he was riding in the day of the crash in which he sustained the injuries that claimed his life. All of the stars and flags that were normally on this vehicle were stripped off by souvenir hunters at the motor pool where it was towed.

The give away ares the air horns Patton insisted on having installed on all his vehicles.

According to the article in the book I have they were the result of "mishaps".

The story was mainly about things German troops were forbidden to photograph. Photographing damage such as this was considered a deterrent to moral and anyone caught faced serious charges. Obviously though, some still did.
