Yep, and I suspect this might have been a crew set charge with massive internal explosion. If so, wise choice.
Indeed. You wouldn't want those pesky Soviets using your own badly designed and ill-thought-through equipment on you would ya?
I dare say many self-destruct episodes took place for any reason available just so the crew could get rid of the worthless beast.

If Adolf liked them so much, he should have taken one into battle.

Absolutely...he should also have been made to bomb advanced Allied units in a Messerschmitt 262 bomber or an Arado Blitz. You must admit though that the Elefant looks like a nasty beast...I'd still hate to meet one in a dark alley.

Could one fit in a dark ally?

Looks like it (helmet) may have been put there on purpose not so long ago?
I'd think the tree would have grown quite a bit more over the years. Plus the helmet looks in decent shape as far as deterioration goes. Interesting either way.

That was my first thought, Horch. "Where's the rust?"

But it seemed interesting so I tossed it in.

A large number of rusted Russian helmets also discovered and photographed in 2005

Looks like a sneaker to the left. It stood the test of time well.
