This is probably a Panzer IV D from the Polish Campaign (Operation White). It appears to have been stripped of all useful components such as tracks, wheels, and machine guns. Undoubtedly the ammon and fuel was removed as well as some engine and transmission components as indicated by the missing cover on the glacis plate.

That don't look like an Ausf. D to me at all! I believe that it's a rare photo of an Ausf. A instead. There were only 35 of 'em produced n' they saw combat in Poland.

I was shootin' from the hip when I posted that.

After comparing it with some pics, if you look at the commanders cupola, only the Ausf A had one with the "beer barrel" configuration!
