My guess is that the "underengineered" Soviet tanks lacked effective vision slits and periscopes for the Driver and Commanders. If you are lumbering along in a tank with poor vision slits, as you bounce around inside you can't really see where you're going. The end result is: Oooops! Crash! "What the hell happened?"

My thinking is that it was not so much the size of the weapon, but what the weapon struck.
