Excellent shot, as for the tarp I would say given it's handiness and somewhat untidy rolling job it would be either for as suggested those "panzer awnings" or maybe even to cover the vehicle as the 233 was open topped or even a little of both. Based on my time in the field it certainly is being used regularly, likely as soon as they stop for any sort of extended break.

This picture and question intrigued me. So several hours later here’s my answer and I'm 99% sure it's an SdKfz 234 with a modified turret from an schwere Panzerspähwagen 232 (8-rad). Took some looking around because most 232's have a gun mantel that is flush with the turret front. This mantel is not; it sits outside the front of the turret. So that threw me off at first thinking it was a foreign turret (unlikely) but one never knows. So after some time I found several pictures showing a 232 with the outside mantel, the best is below. My assessment is as stated above, plus the vision port looks to be plated or otherwise over. Given the rarity and usefulness of these vehicles cobbling together several to make one sure makes sense and is known to happen quite a bit. This is the first time I have seen a 234 with a 232 turret. Excellent picture.

Re: Panzerspahwagens

Very cool Bob, and nice photo. I spent some time thumbing through my library to try and find a match for that turret and couldn't. Drove me nuts.

I'm easily side tracked by stuff like this. I just had to know. Plus usually in the process in find out a bunch of other stuff and new resources! Bonus.
