yes it is it is only fitted with the ir equipment on the cupola and wasnt mounted to the mantlet or the glacis plate from memory this was a late version g model raised enggine fan and flame suppressed exhaust its from munster museum i think

hm very early model d panthers by the look of the small vision slit that can just be made out on the radio mans side of the front glacis plate drivers side is open also the early drum style cupola good photo i wonder where it was taken

This is an amazingly rare photo situation. The photographer wasn't too far away from that blast and he's not the enemy taking that shot. Plus the pic is taken from in FRONT of the targets which are buttoned up, with no muzzle bags, and ready for action! Usually battle shots are from behind because the camera guy isn't on point!!!

My guess would be that the platoon commander of those Panthers snapped that shot just before buttoning the hatch and acquiring a target...

I often find myself wondering about the people who took many of these shots and the danger they put themselves in.

There's a thread on air combat photogs in the Arir Warfare section with a guy wedged into the baggage compartment of an Fw 190. Grapes baby, grapes.
