Re: Growl of the Panther Tank

Ok I read that many of the Western front Panthers ended up in an "Ambush" Scheme. But as resources and time to paint the vehicles became hard pressed, the crews did what they could in the time they had. Fancy Paint jobs began to go South, and basic 2 or 3 color schemes were the norm. SS Div "Wiking" was the only DIvision I know of that had a Standardized Panther Paint scheme...and they used it the war's end..(or as long as the paint lasted) By they very end of the war...I have seen pics of Panthers in the "undercoat" paint or decked out in the Early war Panzer Grau. One shot of a KIA Panther in the Suburbs of Berlin was in the LT Grau (Field Grau) paint....

Crews were free to use what schemes they wanted based on what Regt/Div orders said at the time.
According to my research resources, "Ambush Scheme" was mainly a West Front thing, used during the retreat across France. It was a scheme that allowed the rearguard units to hide, covered in foliage, and Ambush Allied units. (The hope was the hidden vehicles would hit hard, then run away to next position, with the hope that the camouflage would hide em enough from the air and ground.) So it would be really hard to track down just how many vehicles used the Scheme. But many of the Panthers, Hetzers, King Tigers, Jadgpanzers......seem to have been sporting it in France in '44
And if anyone could find more Info on this subject...I would be grateful!

Thumbs up Re: Growl of the Panther Tank

Thanks guys!!

I'm thinking about a Camo thread, but I hav'nt seen all the thread topics yet, so as to not repeat anything here.....

The actual camo jobs are one of the "things" that make the German army so interesting to me, no other nation came close to what they did, but thats for another thread, mine I hope. I'll try to speed through the thread topics and see whats here soon, then take a crack at it!!

Cheers, just remember my pic "handycap"

Tom

My ears are burning!

I'm not much of an expert on camo although I like the concept.

However, I will add the ultimate camo scheme which was used in the Battle of the Bulge by Skorzeny's SS commandos.

The Ersatz M-10/Panther.

Here's a model:

It's an mp3. Most audio programs will play it. If simply clicking it doesn't work, right click and choose "Save as" and save it to your desktop. Then double click it on your desktop and your default player will open and play it.
