Side Note: Horse shoes attached to military vehicles were not uncommon in the Wehrmacht. I have seen them show up in photos on everything from motorcycles to tanks.
The manner in which the horse shoe is placed in this photo is not a mistake. Where in America horse shoes are placed above the doors of homes with the open end up to gather luck, in Germany they are placed down to pour luck onto those who enter.
When placed on vehicles, they are intended to pour luck out onto the road ahead.
