Re: Panzerkampfwagen IV-Medium Tank

and to keep going

these probably should be in the destroyed armour section but they are pertinent to the series. They are destroyed Syrian panzer 4 on the Golan Heights please feel free to move them if required

Very cool. Looks like it could have been the second tank in the column. I like it when two separately posted photos from different sources can be linked.
Good eye sample.

In the book "Hitlers Teutonic Knights" SS Panzers in action, by Bruce Quarrie, this photo is captioned as; PzKpfw IVH of "Totenkopf" division late in 1944. This is a Bundesarchiv photo if I'm reading this correctly it's photo (BA 406/2a)

If this is the case, the Totenkopf and 5th SS Wiking were in Poland around this time, the two divisions made up the 4th SS Panzerkorps under former Wiking division commander Herbert Otto Gille. The fourth SS Panzer Korps fought off determined Soviet attacks that were trying to encircle Warsaw. From the book "Soldiers of Destruction" the SS Deathheads Division 1939-1945. By Charles W Sydnor Jr. "For seven straight days (starting on August 14th 1944) SSTK and SS Wiking repulsed a combined enemy force of fifteen rifle divisions and two armoured brigades who tried to crush the SS Panzerkorps and clear the Wolomin sector." Over the next three weeks or so the Panzerkorps was pushed slowly towards Warsaw and the Vistula river. In mid Sept. Totenkopf launched a locally successful counter attack that cleared the Warsaw suburb of Praga. A three week lull followed but on Oct 10th the Soviet 5th Guards Tank Army launched yet another offensive that compelled 4th SS Panzerkorps to withdraw about twenty miles northwest to the vicinity of Modlin at the confluence of the Bug and Vistula rivers. Here the front stabalized again when the Soviets couldn't punch through the front. And here they stayed until being ordered to break the encirclment of Budapest, the 3rd and 5th SS Divisions of the Fourth SS Panzerkorps were pulled out of the line on Dec 26 and shuttled by train to Komarno in Hungary.

Probably more then anyone wanted to know but have been out of town for about a week and had a lot of time on my hands.

Just a note to the readers, I own both these books and they are both excellent! Lot's of pics in the first, and lots of well researched details in the second.

Pictures of PzIV's seem to just fall off the face of the earth shortly after Normandy when the emphasis shifts to Germanys "Big Cats". Not that there's anything wrong with that either. So thanks again as I'm always interested in looking at late war PzIV's.
