Self-Propelled AA Guns

Hello
Does anyone know which is the best self propelled aa gun used in World War 2? For me, I would say the german Wirbelwind because it was effective against infantry and aircraft (maybe), but this is my opinion. Does anyone know?

Cool Re: Self-Propelled AA Guns

Let me look around some, but for me the numbers "game" should have a big factor here one would think anyways. Most aircraft shot down, or the most effective regardless of actual units built maybe?

Cheers, good question p228!!

I'd say that Sd.Kfz. 161/3 3.7cm FlaK auf Fahrgestell Panzerkampfwagen IV (sf) 'Möbelwagen' n' the 'Ostwind' is the best of the litter.

Ostwind is a definite candidate. Good gun. Good mobility. I haven't seen the specs but the AA Crusader was supposed to be a good example too.

Re: Self-Propelled AA Guns

It do remind of the Wirbelwind but with a single 37mm gun. I'll see if I can locate any pictures.

Re: Self-Propelled AA Guns

My favorite AA mount is the US Quad .50. Being a former Machinegunner, that particular rig stirs me in odd ways!

Granted, it's only good for low-level AA defense, but there's damned little that can stand up to it! Even on the ground, you'd need more than just light armor to withstand it!

Now, I've seen that, but I didn't know what it was. And hey, I saw a base like that being sold (unpainted) at a model show...almost picked it up. Seeing this, now I'm kicking myself!

Re: Self-Propelled AA Guns

Yes. A nice base for sure.

The quad .50 mounted on the M3 halftrack was a nasty piece of work as far as the Wermacht were concerned. The German infantry units had a real fear of that rig due to it's punch. I don't know how it went against aircraft but it was a marvellous ground weapon.
