Ruhe Männer, ruhe! by Jonas Dahlberg

Ruhe Männer, ruhe!
The Diorama: The Convoy PQ18 PQ-18 that departed Scotland on 2 September 1942 was attacked by air and several merchants were lost. A couple of days later on its approach to Kola Inlet U-boats attacked the convoy and three more ships were sunk by U-408. HMS Onslow, which was one of the escorts, hunted the submarines relentlessly for many hours. The diorama shows the moments before the depth charges start raining down on U-589. The captain of U-589 calls out for calm among his men. A couple of minutes later the submarine was destroyed, all hands lost. HMS Onslow got part credit for the sinking.

HMS Onslow(G17) was an O-class destroyer of the Royal Navy which entered service in 1941. She was outfitted as the flotilla leader of the O-class. The HMS Onslow was transferred to Pakistan Navy in 1949. She was in service until 1979.

U-589 was a submarine of the VII C class. She was built at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg and commissioned the 25 Sept, 1941.

The whole base is scratch built from wood plaster, paper and plasticard. The cliffs are made using woodland scenics “Rock Mould set”. The HMS Onslow is from Tamiya. The sub is from Hasegawa U-boat 7C with completely scratchbuilt lower hull. The destroyer is Tamiyas British O-class with scratchbuilt lower hull. Detailing with PE sets from Eduard and Voyager. Figures from Eduard. The whole diorama including the boat is finished with Tamiya acrylics using an Evolution Airbrush. Weathering with oils, acrylics and pigments.

Ruhe Männer, ruhe!

Very nice ideed. For some reason the glass didn't bother me as much as his last piece...looked more authentically "ripply"...is that a word? (it should be!)

The air pockets made by the props. Something like that. A nice piece and an interesting subject.
