Re: Here's my stuff

Thanks guys...I do like an aeroplane.
At my club last night a guy brought in no fewer than three 1/32 Bristol Beaufighter models in various stages of construction. The kits were Revell and really old...raised detail. He'd done small conversion jobs to each as he's building a huge diorama with them (and a taxiing P-51) all in RAAF colours. The RAAF had a squadron called 'The Green Ghosts' with some pretty lively 'Tail Art'. He's doing these being maintained. I have a pic too but it's still in my phone.

That does sound cool Geek, can you get us a picture of it when he's done... I'd love to see that.

Re: Here's my stuff

It's huge mate...he'll need a base around the size of a door. He's done some detail work on the cockpits which looks great but I was thinking about it...his colours are pretty bland...his engines and cockpits anyway. Still, it's a way more ambitious project than I'd ever contemplate...he has a few scratchbuilt maintenance platforms and a few figures as well...it's not gunna be up to Shep's standard but it'll certainly be unique. And big.
we have a real soft spot for the Bristol Beaufighter down here...well we military aviation buffs do. The Aussies did plenty of damage to Japanese shipping and plans at the controls of the 'Whispering Death'. We have a Beaufighter preserved at the local RAAF museum here...I've got pics of that too somewhere. The other big exhibit they have is a Fairey Gannet anti-sub aircraft. It's HUGE and ugly.

Thats not huge mate....My 1/72 RAF Hangar diorama is bigger than that.

Did you know Geek that the Bristol Beaufighter aka 'Whispering Death' (as the japanese found out), was actually an extremely unstable and dangerous aircraft to pilot during take off?

Although it did fly well once it was airbourne and in flight.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: Here's my stuff

I did know that Dave...I believe the dihedral on the horizontal stabilizers helped with the instability. I play IL2 as well. I've pranged the Beaufighter more times than I care to remember.
Beautiful plane though. That lump on the nose is some kind of radome I believe. The guy at the club has added resin blocks to represent those.

Green Ghost Squadron.

BTW I really love the look of those 'porcupine' flame dampers on the Beau in your pic Dave. I know that you can get an absolutely beautiful set of resin ones in both scales (1/72, 1/48)...but I forget who makes them.

Re: Here's my stuff

I really like them too. Now that Roden is producing an excellent range of WW1 aircraft...and not just your SPADs, Camels and Fokkers either...WW1 modellers never had it so good.

Yeah, Rumplers, Avros and Albatross's OH MY! Love some WWI craft, some of the Great War Kraut floatplane stuff was extremely cool! Nasty looking and especially so once you slap on some 4 tone blue lozenge camo! Bad to the Bone!

Re: Here's my stuff

There are actually a couple that have really caught my eye including this little gem. The art is supplied as decals on this one.

edk1118.jpg

I have a copy of Dragon's Fokker D VIII in 1/48 as well. This 'Flying Razor' has four colour lozenge on the whole fuselage. Decals also. A good excercise in decal technique and quite a good WW1 kit for those who don't relish rigging. There's some PE included (as is a bust of Oswald Boelcke ) but I think it's stainless steel rather than brass. Very thick and tough to bend even after heating. The slotted sleeves for the Spandau armament are PE and need to be rolled into a tube. Having tried this once before years ago, I'm not looking forward to having to solve that little puzzle.
