Re: Tips and helpful suggestions
I take a little from both sides. It never occurred to me to do anything like a 'quick build', where I'm less concerned with finish and detail, until I started doing little 1/72 aircraft for my son to smash in ten minutes. Usually, I don't even paint 'em and I have a fair collection of intact 1/72 decals. Part of the reason I only build vehicles (when I do) in 1/35 and aircraft in 1/48 or above is because it's the right 'space' for the level of detail that pushes my modelling buttons. For me, the detail (such as brass bomb fins in 1/72) is where the challenge and the 'buzz' lies for me. And weathering. Different for everybody of course...some folks could build my Panzer IV in a week, I've taken six months or more now, both models may end up being comparable in terms of viewer interest or enjoyment too. I also enjoy the ingenuity folks have when they make a part or enhance a part or whatever 'additions' they make.

Re: Tips and helpful suggestions
Maybe it's got a lot to do with our own interests and what we are best at. Some people seem to be brilliant with figures but their efforts on vehicles are bland as if they just wanted to knock something up to put the wonderful figures on. I have trouble as I've said before with ships and aircraft. A lot of that may be to do with the kits I have done being almost exclusively Airfix (older mostly). I think it may be partly due to my own preference for other subjects though. I built a 1/72 Spitfire for a friend and spent more time on the refuelling truck than I did on the plane. In the end the whole think looked ok but the plane could have been a lot better, especially since it is what most would actually look at first.
Too many ideas and too little patience perhaps. That is one of the major reasons why I appreciate these builds so very much. It has shown me that sometimes that little bit of patience with something that is not necessarily a favourite can be well rewarded. |

Re: Tips and helpful suggestions
Both great point of views lads! I think we all have a lot in common, and all at different levels of experience and time invested in honing the craft. I really look at model building as a craft...a definitely an art. No matter the amount of detail, or how quicly you bang ourt the sucker, or for what motivation, the fact that you applied one drop of glue to a piece and pressed it against another attests to an effort in creativity. Even the disasters mean something.
I've amazed myself at the amount of time and detail I've put into my builds; I've not really cut corners; and I've had a lot of surprises (not all of them nice). But the build is a signiture in so many ways, and is very emblematic of where we are in our own right. To me, it's all good.

Leadfoil!
A possible place to get leadfoil can be you're very own dentist. The X-Ray plates have a thin protective leadfilm n' I guess that you're dentist isn't allowed to just throw it away but has to collect 'em as goods dangerous to the enviroment. But you can also be out of luck if your dentist have gone digital... Good Luck!

Re: Tips and helpful suggestions
Leadfoil? Hmmm, toxicity issue I'm sure would be low, so that sounds like a good source. I winder if aluminum foil is used at all...I would thing it would be harder to use.

Re: Tips and helpful suggestions
I think we might all have the right idea and attitude when it comes to modelling which is a great thing. Thanks to all who have commented - food for thought.
As to foil - lead or aluminium. Lead is toxic for sure but at it's worst when heated for pouring. There are some alloy foils which mix aluminium with other metals. These are good to work with abd better to paint than straight aluminium. One wierd thing I have seen used is low melting point solder. Not lead but something even more dangerous if I remember rightly. There are a few types and one which melts at around 56 degrees C (just over half the boiling point of water). Easy to use but fairly expensive. |
