Refurbishing

I was wondering if anyone has an older kit they have already made and painted which isn't what you would like it to be. That is, something done a long time ago that doesn't match how you would do it now.

I have an old Tamiya JagdPanther which I never liked. I haven't ever had it on display as it really annoyed me. The kit is ok but the paintwork I did isn't great. My plan is to repaint and add weathering as well as a couple of figures to try to bring it back to life. At the moment it looks like a toy.

I will use the methods I have learned since I made it and lean heavily on the info here. If those who are more accomplished can offer help I would appreciate it.

Also, if anyone else wants to do this please join in.

I will post a start pic as soon as I can so we can all decide what it should end up like. I will only be working with what I've got so no extra purchases. The plan here is that mine and any others shown can be a sort of reverse group build.

Re: Refurbishing

If you intend to strip the old paint off, there's a great and easy product that works really well. I know you said no other purchases though...

Re: Refurbishing

When I said no other purchases I meant resin and white metal add ons. A stripper or whatever would be ok as I imagine there would be some for other purposes later on. The paint used was Tamiya acrylic with some Humbrol for other bits so since we are after information on how to do this kind of thing I think that a solution like that would fit nicely.

Re: Refurbishing

Any ammonia based window cleaner will strip Tamyia acrylic. You probably will have to use a toothbrush to do some scrubbing.

The Jagd should be an easy project for renovation since it has clean lines and everything is accessible for painting when the model is assembled.

Re: Refurbishing

The one time I've evr stripped paint, I used a product called 'ELO Easy Lift Off' by 'Poly S'. It comes in a white and brown tin and works like a charm. I used an old oven tray to do it in. You paint the stuff straight onto the model, leave it until the paint 'crazes' and then use an old toothbrush to remove it. It leaves the odd little bit in cracks and crevasses but it works really well and is purpose made.

Re: Refurbishing

Thanks gents. That should give me a start.

Here is the thing as it is now. It's a bit dull on the sand colour to me.
There are some joins that need filling too. I don't have access to a model shop here that is any good so any ideas on what to use?

I don't know mate. I only ever use 'Milliput'. You may find it at a hardware shop.

Re: Refurbishing

OK. I found some paint stripper in the shed that works on this thing. First off I used some Domestos as it has ammonia in it and it took the top off nicely. The stripper is good too so a bit more work and it will do.

I have also managed to strip a handle, a tool, and the machine gun off the damn thing in the process but they will go back on all right.
