I saw the name on the side but as much as I tried I couldn't figure it out with my ancient eyes. I'm enlisting my son to try and read it.

Absolutely correct. Converted to a monitor and scuttled at Tobruk by the Italians to prevent capture by the British.

I cannot make out the crest

It looks like a Leander class except the foremast. I was guessing that the Indian Navy might have modified the mast to look like that at some point since I cannot find any picture of how the Indians had modified it.

You're right, it does look like a Leander Class Cruiser!! But she's not.
