Re: U,S. Destroyers vs Japans and German Destroyers.

By 44 the allies were putting out very good destroyers (Commonwealth Tribal).

The Tribal was really good n' the Battle was in the pipeline... USN had a completely different thinkin' n' doctrine with their destroyers than RN had.

Cool Re: U,S. Destroyers vs Japans and German Destroyers.

Thanks again guys, was there any "gun on gun" action in any battles, or just the torpedo?

Cheers, thanks again!!

I think you would lose count on Destroyer actions. Guns, torpedoes, ramming. Real Terriers and involved in so many varied actions.

Re: U,S. Destroyers vs Japans and German Destroyers.

There are lots of action between Axis and Commonwealth destroyers in the North sea, English Channel, and Med.

Ramming? The only ramming I'm aware of (except for Destroyers ramming
subs) was UK Destroyer Glowworm ramming German Cruiser Hipper
off Norway in '40 before being sunk. Was there others?

Re: U,S. Destroyers vs Japans and German Destroyers.

The only other ramming that I'm familiar is HMS Campletown's ramming of the docks at St Nazaire.

RN did operate destroyer flotillas more offensive n' their destroyers had a greater punch. USN was more in the line of usin' their destroyers for screening their fleet operations. USN's major destroyer type 'Fletcher' class was more of a escort destroyer than for example the Tribal or for that matter the Battle was.
